HD Tour pak hole repairs
Does anyone have knowledge of bondo actually working on hole repairs on an abs tour pak? After Internet researching and proceeding with abs/plastic and cement repairs, I found that they have failed in that the repair came to life and swelled or shrank enough so that the repair became visible. Repeated primer and sanding did not stop this from re-occurring. Good thing it was only primered. I would think that bondo would not do this. Ideas anyone?

You might try the above Harbor Freight site for a plastic welder. Have never tried it but have spoke to people who have repaired plastics with them. Price is right for this item if it works. Good Luck!!

Need pics, and ABS is hard to get other things to stick too.
With that said Bond brand sucks, it simply will not feather out and it chips off when you try. On steel, fiberglass, and plastics NOT ABS I like 'Chromalite' for final coat before primer. It might stick to ABS, but i don't know that. The hardest part for you is getting something to stick to ABS.

HD tourpaks are made out of SMC plastic. I've repaired HD stuff with Fiberglass cloth and some smc epoxy filler stuff. I'll try to find out exactly what i used but it's been a while. ABS glue/ solvent won't even touch the harley smc plastic.

Buggy6 is right about the SMC plastic. I think it's a plastic/fibreglass sandwich. If you go to a body shop or a place that sells the supplies they should have the right 2 part filler. I think the stuff I used was called Fixor but there are other brands. I used that and fibreglass cloth to repair the crack in the TourPak I have.

I used an independent shop N of Phoenix, Az that had a mechanic that did plastic welding. It worked great on my 87 Venture Royale fairing. He told me the trick is knowing what plastics you are working with so that you can match the rod to it. If they don't match it is a mess and close won't work. I think the shop was CMS and it was on the south city limits of an old mineing town tourest trap. I don't remember the name of the town, but CJ or someone from that area may be able to tell you.
Thanks for your time

Thanks for the feedback everyone. With the good weather practically here I'm anxious to bring this trunk to a conclusion. The HD lightbar yet to be installed will cover quite a few of these repairs. Possible custom side light installations will conceal some more. Probably should have bid on a trunk without all these dang holes, (it was a cheap buy) but at least my bodywork skills are getting a workout. Will eventually post the finished product pictures.

That's the stuff buggy6. Maybe fixor was close? :-/
That's the stuff that seemed to work the best for me. The thing to remember with the HD material is, if you see a crack starting, drill it at the end so it does not spread. It does not happen that often but cracks can show up at the bottom of the hinge attachments.
