Spot light Bulbs

My Nomad came with a set of spot lights mounted that were not working, on investigation I found that both bulbs were blown. I seem to recall a thread on here somewhere that someone was having problems keeping bulbs in their spotlights.
I am unsure of the manufacturer of this particular unit but has anyone had any luck keeping bulbs in their spotlights?
Thanks
Jim

Spot light Bulbs

Passing lamps as I call them, take a lot of amps. I would want to make sure whoever installed the lights, also installed a relay. Otherwise electrical problems could result.

I have Cobra Lamps and they came with a 25w bulb. Those are hard to find so I upgraded to 35w from the dealer listed below. My local Auto Zone has 50w, but I think the 35w is all I needed.

I do think the passing lamps help me to be seen. I run with mine on all the time.

Post a pic of the driving lamps, and I am sure one of us on here will have the same type and / or know what brand they are. I have bulbs and have never had them burn out yet. Others it seems prefer to swap them out to seal beams.

I originally had 35W sealed beams, then I installed some 55W halogen bulbs, and they really make a big difference at night. I do almost half my riding at night so the extra light is a welcome sight.
Take the old bulb to a UAP or Napa store and they should be able to match the bulbs for you.

I have the Cobra driving/passing lamps with 25W halogen. I upgraded to35W then 55W. I thought the 25W are useless and hard to find too. I bought 6 x 55W halogen bulbs at Princess Auto for $3.50 a pop. I also highly recommend you use a relay even with the 35W bulbs.

If your lightbar has the switch on the lightbar I also recommend you wire up a switch that is easier to reach so you can switch them on and off as required. I switch off if I am in slow traffic delays.

I simply double sided a small radio Shack project box with a toggle switch under the left side handle bar switch assembly and by-passed the switch on the lightbar.

A picture of the lamps and/or bulbs would help here.

Off topic Ringadingh that bike just looks awesome. Are the lower pods the ones I have seen being offered on the site?

Thanks for the compliment, my lower fairings are the ones made by Premeux. They were the original mfg of the lowers. I love them in the rain and cold weather.

I haven't had any problems with the 55 watts Piaa type which can be had in LOWES... No problems with H-3, that once were E -3, either, and no problems with 35 watts yellow fluted glass fog lights either. I bet one of these types is what you have, but which?

One idea if these turn out to be H-3 is that whom ever installed them got their greasey finger prints on the glass, which will fry the glass and kill the bulb.

I think macmac is probably correct; whoever previously installed your bulbs got their greasy finger prints on them. I've been running H-3 55W amber bulbs wired on a relay with no problems at all.

Here is a picture of the spotlight. I did notice that there was no relay in the circut and the power wire for the spotlights is fused, the bulbs are 30 watt right now but I will upgrade that to a 55 watt as many here have done. has anyone wired them so that they come on with the key or does everyone use a seperate switch? what relay should I get?
thanks for all your help on this
Jim

Those are the CWI (Chrome World International) billet mount lights. I have a set myself. Apparently, there are 2 possible types of bulbs in those lamps from the vendor.

I've yet to blow one in 2 years on my bike.

There's a pic of my spots below. I have them powered off the running lite circuit which is hot when ignition is on. Light bar has a in line switch so I can turn spots on or off when ignition is on.
Before everyone jumps me with I better put a relay and separate circuit in cause I am going to burn up my bike, this was the manufacturers recomend way of installing. The bar has been this way 3 1/2 years (was first accessory I installed at 1 week of owner ship) with no problems.
It came with 35w H-3 bulbs and I only know that because I replaced my first bulb about 4 weeks ago. Lots of variation in the price of bulbs. Locale shop wanted $12 a piece, bought a 6 pac of bulbs from internet dealer in MD including shipping right at $2.50 a bulb.
