Oil change panic

I just changed oil on 08 1600.this was my first go with oil and
have about 1000 miles.Im second owner.I pulled the oil screen and found some thin rubber gasket like material on screen. one
was almost a inch long again very thin and about a 1/8th wide.
the other similar stuff was small and I wouldnt say allot of it. I saw nothing else or any kind of metal. Question is what might it be and should I give it any further thought. It all went back together fine thanks

Oil change panic

Maybe the o-ring that seals the side drain plug?

Oil change panic

I let the dealership do the 600 mile oil change and asked that they pull the screen and clean it. I asked them to let me know what they found when I picked it up. They told me that the screen was clean. I changed the oil myself at 3000 miles and the screen was cluttered with gasket material and other little pieces of black crud. No metal. Just goes to show that service techs will tell not truths. They didn't pull the screen because when I changed again at 6000 miles there wasn't a speck of anything in it. I wouldn't worry about it unless you found metal shavings. Next time you change the oil it will be clean.

Oil change panic

I think it is fairly normal to have some debris in the screen the first and maybe second oil change. I know I had some debris in the screen on the first change but has been pretty clean since then.

Oil change panic

If you find rodent hair or bone chips, that would be really bad...along with metal.

Oil change panic

I found stuff like that. I chalk it up to the oil filter. It is truly the only way to introduce new debri into that area. As long as I don't find any metal I don't worry.
Or rodent hair and bone. . . I guess that would probably freak me out too.

Oil change panic

First time is about it to find hunks of stuff in the screen. The rubber like stuff moght be the O ring or it is more likely gasket maker goo.

I check mine every other oil change, but it has been clean since the first time. I have never once used the so called drain bolt, and see no reason too.

I can controll the flow rate of the plug with the 4 open slots much better, and stay clean.

Be advised that when you change engoing oil it is best to change the reag gears oil too. That measelu 6.2 oz isn't hardly going to stand any 24,000 miles.. sorry ain't happenin'

And don't over fill the gear BOX! use no more than 6 oz.

Set the side stand in a 2x4 so the bike still has some lean, and fill it that way.

Yes it will OP. I take mine off of the sidestand and let it lean a little harder after it has all drained and only get a few drops. Make sure you take a ride before draining to warm up the gear oil. If it's cold, it won't drain very well.

My exact experience with the dealer for my 600 mile inspection. I asked which plug they drained the oil out of and they said we undo both and clean the screen, Bull. The second and subsequent oil changes I have done my self and found gasket glue and other crud the first time, and clean after that.
