Haven't had that happen yet so I'm of no help. I wonder if it would be easier with the pipe warmed up some rather than cold? I'm sure someone has a good answer. Where in the heck have you been Dave?

Wet it, I prefer oven cleaner. It will cut in more... Oh! Don't heat the pipes.. That just stains the chrome deeper.

Rub with the edge of a common coin we call nickel. It is nickle, ie: german silver, and it is softer than chrome. Work slow and easy. Once done clean all the pipe covers from finger prints before you heat them.

I do not reccomend steel wool, because it is harder than chrome.

Pretty simple.

If you want to order a wicked good product for this and for over all CHROME and alloy, NOT PAINT, search Lusterlace, and buy a kit. Not sold in any stores I know of.

When I found that stuff at Laconia Bike Week I was all about proving the stuff was schlock. I was WRONG...

When I had to do it.....Iused some simichrome polish and a Dremel with a small polishing wheel at slow speed and careful hand pressure........I ran the bike for about 1 minute before hand to heat the pipes.....no problems with staining or removing.....just be careful with the dremel and don't over do it.

What bit was on the dremel? I take it as a brass brush, or something softer than chrome?

I think it might have been on Gadet's site where I read to use a scotch brite pad, but I haven't needed to try it, yet, but you might check there. The site also mentions something about adding a section of iron board cover to the section of your rain suit that is in close proximity with the pipes, sorta' making them heat resistant.

Steel wool will skuff chrome, and make it appear dull, as about anything as hard, or harder than chrome.

Use Easy-Off COLD oven cleaner. Spray it on COLD pipes, let it sit and it should soften it up and it will come right off.

I wouldn't use a scotch brite pad, that will scratch the chrome. I know this from experience on another bike. Ive used a sharp razor blade and carefully peeled off most of it, then cleaned the remaining bit up with chrome polish.

I melted a set of frog togs on the Vance and Hines I had on my bike and had to ride another 300 miles before I could even try to clean the pipes. (burning rainsuits was one of many reason why I went back to stock pipes) Anyway, Brasso (the liquid us Jarheads use on our belt buckles and other brass) is what I used. Shake it up real good, put it on the pipe when it is cold. Use a bunch and each time while you are rubbing it in when it starts to dry add some moe to your cloth. Took about 10 minutes to get it all off. You got to be carefull if you go out to buy Brasso, a lot of it is 5 or years old. Make sure you get some that is fairly recent like have a buddy in the service buy some at the PX. It also takes blue off chrome and it's not as abrassive as simichrome so the chrome doesn't look like satin finish when you are done.

I too melted my frogtoggs on my Vance & hines straightshots on my last bike, heated up pipes to operating temp, used neverdull wadding & it came off very easily. No scrubbing involved, and didn't stain pipes at all. The pipes were brand new when it happened & 2 minutes of clean up, you couldn't tell it ever happened.

I agree with the Brasso, works great. I would not recomend scotchbrite, it will scratch as will steel wool unless you do want a dull finish

it was softer than chrome...it was a soft cotton fiber polishing wheel...I would be a little afraid to use a metal based bit or wheel on the chrome.

Well unlike most, the economic downturn has caused our business to skyrocket, especially in the last 2 quarters. So I have been very busy with work and traveling quite a bit. I have been to San Antonio, Austin (twice), Akron, OH (twice), Seattle (twice). So I have been busy as hell. I did find time to take the bike for the 7500 mile service at the dealer, but otherwise have been effectively coming home to swap out clothes that my wife has been gracious enough to clean for the ever disappearing husband. Hell, I have barely had time to shoot my guns in competition as I have been on the road. I am back now though. :)
