Cable locks

Planning a trip to Ohio this summer and I'm starting to think about security. Does anyone use a cable lock or some other aftermarket locking system on their bikes? Recommendations?

I use a cable lock. I got it at wal mart, forget the price but I thought it was reasonable at the time. It's 6 ft long and is keyed. I think you can get some that are combination locks.

In all the travels I have been on and the many nights I have stayed in a motel, I have not used any more then the normal lock. But if I was to get one, I would do what Doc has said.

I just use the triple tree lock....I have not seen it mentioned in the threads regarding lockups previous to this one.

I am assuming everyone knows that you can lock the triple tree all the way over to the left so a casual thief can only push it around in a circle...of course, like any locking mechanism, it can be defeated.

I have a combination cable lock. Don't know the brand.
If you use a cable be sure to put it through the frame and not just the tire. I also lock the forks as todd mentioned.

Like TC said, I also lock the forks in addition to the cable. It can be defeated, but also the harder it is for someone to steal the less likely they are to go to the trouble.

A big set of bolt cutters can render most cable lock useless

Two guys with a pipe through the front wheel can wheel barrow a bike most anywhere they want especially if a third is helping to push it up the ramp onto the trailer.


Get an alarm. When it goes off come out of the motel room with the S&W or Glock and take care of the problem by exercising alternative options.

Yea, I know, I'm from rural Texas. We just take care of problems a little different around here.

Have a Disclock Alarm that fits on the front brake. When you move it it sens out a 110db alarm that hurts you ears. This also keeps you from driving off with the lock on the caliper.

I have a Scropio alarm with perimter sensor. if set to perimeter it will beep 120 dB slowly and if they come closer it will beep faster until triggered completely. or you can turn off perimeter and just set it. This requires somebody to touch, bump, set on it, etc to alrm. I like it alot. has a remote key fob for activating, etc.

I,m glad to say that here in Canada the bikes of choice for the Motorcycle thief are Harleys and Goldwings.There are lots of people out their who don't understand just how good these bikes are,what a shame....

I appreciate all of the responses. Looks like I just have to decide which one of these would best for my needs. The Scorpio system that Doc uses appears to be the best, and most expensive. I know, if the bike is saved, it's worth it. Thanks to all of you.
