Rides for 2010 Rally

Dick (dkdixie) and Mike (classic1) are going to be investigating and putting together the rides for our rally. If you may have a route or area that is of interest to you, please post in this thread or let either of these two gentlemen know.

I want to thank both of them for their efforts in this endeavor.

Rides for 2010 Rally

Mike and I discussed the rides this morning.

Our plan is to put together three basic rides for the Rally days.

1) Tues, primarily on Blue Ridge Pkwy and Skyline Drive.

2) Wed, ride into West Virginia on route that Mike knows well and I rode many years ago when I lived in Stuarts Draft.

3) Thurs, easy day ride (since most have a long ride home on Fri/Sat), including at least one of the major historical sites in the area.

We'll finalize the routes as early as possible so those with GPS can enter the information.

Hey everyone, How far away will we be from Arlington
Nation Cemetary? And would a ride over to there even be
something anyone else would even be interested in?
Or somewhere like Gettysburg? Just a thought. Never been to
either, don't even know far away they are?

Arlington is a pretty good hike, about 160 miles via interstate, one way. Gettysburg is 180 one way, or both and return would be 424 miles round trip. I wouldn't have a problem doing one for a early morning ride on Friday or leave early Thursday and go. We could do that as an additional trip if anyone is wanting to go.

And you ain't lived until you ride/drive around the Washington, DC area. :'(

Mike and I did discuss the "New Market Battlefield," which is kind of neat.
That's the one where they put young students in the line from Lexington Military Academy.
Its also the one that got into a little trouble many years ago because the Bars & Stars was flying just a tad higher than Old Glory!

I have been up in the northern virginia/ DC area a couple of times in just the last few months. I swear it gets worse by the day! It is no place for a bike. Gettysburg is 3 hours from Staunton,If you like Civil war stuff you may want to think about Antetum battlefield in Md about 2 hours north as a day trip. Also your only about 35 minutes from Lexington,VMI, Stonewall Jackson and the Marshall museum. Just an idea.

I agree with Mark. I've been in the D.C. area a lot over the years and I have no interest in getting anywhere near there on a bike. It's worse than Atlanta.
