Weird problems (w/update)

I was on a ride yesterday and hit some rain. Made a filthy mess of my bike, so I decided to clean it up today. As I was shining the chrome I noticed that one side of my front fender rail is cracked. It's just forward of where the two rails join into one near the mounting holes. I'm pretty sure I caused it when I grabbed it as Toophun and I were reassembling the steering head after servicing the bearings. That was discovery #1.

Discovery #2 was that my rear exhaust pipe had come loose at the head again. I've noticed it loosening up a couple of times recently and have been checking it with a torque wrench. Well today as I was polishing the left muffler, it seemed to have a lot of movement. I traced it back to the head. So I dropped the left muffler and removed the pipe. I found a piece of the lip on the end of the pipe had cracked and broken off. So I managed to get it seated back in the exhaust port and hopefully it will stay. If not, I'll be contacting Cobra about replacing the pipe under the lifetime warranty.

During the ride yesterday, we stopped at the side of the road to take pictures. As I was putting my camera back in the tourpak, one of the latches broke. So after I got back home, I went to the HD dealership in Chandler to see if they had replacement latches. They did, only they did not have the key-lock built into them. So I bought 2 new latches (the stamping on them indicates they were built by the same company in China that made the latches my Scootworks trunk came with). I also ordered the HD tourpak lock kit: the barrel lock assembly and catch that you see on HD tourpaks.

The guys at the dealership were very nice, even after I told them I didn't ride a Harley when they asked about keying the lock to match my ignition key.

This may turn out to have been an expensive weekend.

Wow... Your bike is falling apart!!! JK

I had cobras on one of my other bikes. When the chrome tips started having issues, cobra replaced them. Their customer service was very good.

You just spend a little more time with me- we'll find a way to spend that money...

It is interesting- perhaps not all that surprising- that the HD latches would be of the same origin as the Scootworks latches.

But it's no secret a lot of the HD accessories come from overseas- and I've noticed a few guys on HD forums complaining about the fit and finish of different things they've bought with HD on the box..

Just minor glitches that indicate you actually ride your scoot, not just look at it! :)

I feel for ya Scott.....kinda reminds me of the day my Harley left me on the side of the road quite a few miles from home.

There will be better days ahead....

Are you sure you'll be out of the grieving process by Western Rally time?

No kidding...this is starting to cost me some big $$. I should never have given up cocaine, it was cheaper!

Now don't go getting silly on us Scott. You know it's a way different high. And you can't put a price on your life.
I know you were just kidding though. Hey you'll be putting on a brand new pipe from Cobra, I'm sure. For FREE. ;)

and next time you "grab hold" of something while working on your bike,....treat it like a lady.

Not so sure you can give any of "us" HD owners any harrassment given all the problems you listed!!!

Weird problems (w/update)

I came on a odd thing wrong todday myself... OT, but it is odd stuff here right?

Last spring I pretty nuch parked my cage, and stored it for bike season... Ran good then, but today the timing belt is deado.... never saw one fail parked before.

However i suspect mice chew, and to the point of total seperation. Thankfully this engine is a cleanace engine and so no smashed valves and pistons.

I am pretty curious about that cobra pipe though....
