They really must have been riding tight and fast. What a way to ruin a trip.

As Steve said... now they can go back and fix their bikes.

I hope everyone comes out of it without any long term injuries and makes a full recovery.
I hate to sound callous, but as a former paramedic that has worked dozens of motorcycle accidents,I can say that in every single wreck I went to,there was always something that the rider could have done to minimize or prevent the accident altogether.I don't mean to downplay the seriousness of the situation, but It sounds like they were not riding to conditions and got complacent.
Again,I hope everyone makes a full recovery and something will be learned by everyone(including those that read this story) from this incident.

another testamant of why not to ride double-file and so close to your leader and always look ahead . . .
BTW I've also heard of a friend's GoldWing group get into trouble because whole group was yaking away on their CB's and not paying attention to upcoming road construction . . .

5 maybe 6 riders is about my limit and I prefer to ride last "Sweep". This is a problem when I lead guests..

As to avoidance, Yup, most of the time these things can be avoided. My 79' crash could have been, if people didn't drive drunk, states placed stop signs legally, and if I was a better rider than I was back then.

My 05 crash was un-avoidable so far as i can tell. The trailer somehow came off the hitch and the lock and latch were still in good shape. It remains a mystery.

My 09 crash, if I had paid just a slight bit more attention, or had 3 more feet, would have just been close. pretty much it was just closer than just close and all I got was a dinged up ft fender.

Lesson learned: In moose country you need more stopping room. I failed to understand that when a 4 wheel vehical hits a moose it stops Right Now. At 45 mph you need more than 100 feet.

IMHO They are certainly old enough to know better than to ride like that.

I wish them all a speedy recovery, so they can get back out there and do it again.

After the first couple bikes went down, what were the rest of the group doing to drive into them like that, besides not paying attention.

Just wondering if the SUV pulled out in their lane in front of them? Can't imagine experienced bikers just slamming into a vehicle ahead.

New reports stated traffic stopped and the SUV was in front of the bikers. According to the link at the beginning of this thread the first two bikes made it around. The others were the ones that crashed. Seems to me they must have been riding too close and possibly a little too fast.

More than likely they were moving at too fast a pace and too tight a formation. I prefer to lag back a few bike lengths even though a couple on here have made comments about me being afraid of curves. Who cares, I sure don't. As Clint Eastwood has said, "A man's got to know his limits."

Wow! Luckily there were no fatalities.....Hope everyone heals quickly and completely. With winter approaching they will have time for rebuilding and reflecting on what happened.......

I couldn't tell if they were riding parade style but it may not have mattered. I prefer(insist) on riding in the staggered style.
