TFI adjusting
Ok, I have had my TFI installed now for about 2 weeks.
My orginal settings were 3, 6, 1, 9. I got almost no pinging using regular gas. My mpg dropped from 38-40 to around 36. Also, with the intake mod, I have noticed more engine noise. I assume this is normal. I get a little more sewing machine sound and when I really get on the throttle I hear a clack clack clack sound that I am not use to. Does this all sound normal? 2008 Nomad FI with 18000 miles. I have changed my settings to 2:45, 3, 1, 9 to try.

have you removed the reed valves? I did the open intake and removed the cold idle solenoids from inside the air intake. Still got engine noise. Removed the reed valves and installed coasters. Now the only sound I hear is the air going into the intake. which by the way makes a large variety of different sounds, from a high pitched whistle to a low pitched kind of puff puff puff sound at low rpm. I love it.

Those are within normal settings for the TFI. mpg will drop a few so normal. when you do the air intake mod(cadman), you WILL most assured get more noise. You need to take the green wires off both solenoids(silver bullets) and ziplock them so they dont short out anything. this will prevent the clattky clack all the time. After you do that then it wont want to idle when cold started so you have to hold some throttle each cold start up or pull out the choke knob on the left side. yes I hear big air intake sounds, alot of crankcase air pump sounds(thats another story on how to fix). Then there is just plain ole valve clatter which you can hear all the time. Mine is an '05 same mods you have done. Good Luck

My solenods are gone. I put the chuckster plate in and the old back plate is in a box in my garage along with the solenoids, so it is not the solenoid making noise. The bike seems to run much better and much more responsive to the throttle, so I am pretty sure the noises are normal, it just seems more noisy now, which is not bad, just a little different.

One reason you hear more sounds is because the old dog bowls were designed to hide a lot of sound.. Go look at the old chrome covers again... They are heavy huh...
This is like standing next to a car with the engine running and then poppin' the hood to hear it again...

I am still using the old dog bowls. I have the stealth look. But it is just on there for looks. I got the double plate from chuckster. Left side untouched.
I do have one other question. I have what I believe is a california emmissions bike. It has a canister in the left side cover velcroed down. Is that for California bikes? Should I do anything to it since the TFI and air mod?

Good question.....
And the dog bowls are no loner sealed... Look at the old backing plate.. I assume you still have a sealed left side with a air filter in there... I'll think abut your particular set up a bit... And yes if you have the canister you have a cali version bike.

I run my TFI at 3, 6, 1, 9 and have an '07 with V&H baggers, a right side 9" K&N Cadmann (left side still connected) reed valves removed (coaster plates) and the cold idle solenoids still hooked up. Upon start, etc, I will hear the clack clack clack but I know it's the CIS "talking" to me via the 19" tubes I hooked up to them and ran through the cross-over tube into the "basically now defunct" original filter. I am averaging above 45 mpg, 2-up at 70 mph..
**added....that's per a Canadian gallon, 4.54 liters vs a US gallon @ 3.8 liters (I think). 'bout time the US came on board with the rest of the world isn't it ;-) |

been running 3 6 1 9 debaffled left side K&N with dog bowl opened up.
Lost about 3 to 4 mpg but run regular now. Fan comes on only when over 90 degrees and stuck a long time in traffic; otherwise fan never comes on and engine is so much cooler its like riding a different bike

I'm using the same settings as BD, with a 7" K&N filter on the right side only, and seem to be happy with it.
I'd like to think it runs cooler, although at 105 degrees today the whole bike feels like an oven. I'm convinced it runs cooler though because my exhaust doesn't tick like an old pocket watch when you shut the bike off. (Not as much anyways) And, no pinging on 87 octane. :) :) :) |

I am using both of Chucksters plates as well, the back plate which replaces the plastic stock plate (removed noids), and the "newly released" Chuckster front plate, which does create a nice seal (just so you know Mac). So, I have both plates and the 7" K&N filter, and am still using the stock dogbowl cover, which now has about a 3/4" gap where you can see the back of the filter.
I have the TFI 2050 (plug and play version), with POT settings same as BD (3-6-1-9), and debaffled my stock mufflers. I also removed the reed valves and replaces with Chuckster's coasters. You will notice more noise, like Mac said...it's like opening the hood of your car when it is running, things are going to be louder, but I am sure that what you are hearing is normal. The sounds of the throttle body take some getting used to, but I think it is cool and love the sound. |

thanks for the info all. I have not removed the reed valves and replaced with the coasters. What is the benefit of removing the reed valves? what do they do?

Brian, My 9"x2" air filter is sealed with hardware store window foam in the groove on the oem backing plate, which anyone running a filter like that should be.
So my filter is sealed from both sides, but is also more open for sounds to get out. The OEM dog bowl has a black vinal / rubber seal mounted on it and it sits in a groove, and seals out air, dirt and sounds.. Most any mods to the intake system leave the sound louder since there is less to seal them in. BD's way still running the left side only, thru the cross over tube is probably the quietest, but he is loosing some of all possible air for it. He is making a trade off for reasons known to him and getting less air. The next set up is like yours, with a oem left side reduced to nill for a ballanced look. 99% of working air enters the right side on your set up, making the left moot. The engine will take almost all it's air from the 7 inch filter right next to the throttle body, leaving the left side to do nothing, but look the way you want it to. The next set up then is mine which is naked on the left, no more air crossover tube, and just a right side filter which will be as noisey as your set up of not more so. Air has only one way to get in my engine, and right thru that 9"x 2" filter. Probably what I have is as noisey as it gets, unless you have a hyper charger on and have not wired the butterflys open, or removed the vac line to just keep them open. But my hearing is impaired and I don't hear all the sounds most others can, so none of it bugs me.

If you run a marble you have semi disconnected the reed valves anyway, but in time they will cook from not getting a chance to function as intended. The valves in this system are a plastic like substance, and are reeds which are like, hmmmm little flappers that close over a hole to prevent the hole from breathing both ways. When pressure pushs one the from exhaust side they remain closed. When there is engine vacuum the pod that controlls them allows fresh air to pass thru large tubings, and pass into the exhaust, which is supposed to burn already burned fuel in the exhaust more.
