Had to plug my rear tire today. Is it safe to ride this weekend ? I can't get a new tire until next monday or later . I need the pros and cons on this deal . Thanks

I agree with Lasse. If you plug it correctly, I think it is completely safe.

One caution: I recently had to replace my rear tire. I had ridden on a plug for several months. I added Dynabeads. The plug eventually started leaking and I'm wondering if the beads wore away the plug from the inside.

I got a flat at a motorcycle rally about 2 weeks after I bought a tire plug kit for motorcycles. http://www.stopngo.com/products/plugger/1001.asp May seem expensive but it was cheaper than a tow home. I plugged the tire and rode that tire another 3000 miles, and up to 100 miles an hour. When I replaced the tire I looked inside and it looked like I had just put it there. Never leaked. This was on the stock tire at that. Smaller than a pencil pouch for school and easy to do in the field.

Ive used plugs in the past and they lasted the life of the tire. If they are done right I don't have a problem using them.

Plug it and ride, it works well, Dont be so afraid to run out and buy another tire, unless your rich.

I rode with a plug in front tire for months and then got 1500 miles away from home and it started to leak. Replaced it as soon as I found a new tire.

Thanks guys for the input my wife and I are going on ride this weekend plug and all. I did order a new tire today it will be in later next week thanks.

I have never used a plug in a motorcycle tire but have used several on different cars. That doesn't mean I wouldn't plug a MT just never had to do it. If the tire looks good I would plug it in a heart beat.

if your going to ride it, especially 2 up, i would keep checkin the air pressure every chance you get.

I caught a nail after about 1000 miles on a new tire. Put a t-plug in it and have not had a problem in over a year. Unless there is an issue, I plan on riding on the tire until it's worn out.

I picked up a nail in the center of my rear tire right after I got back from Custer. I plugged it, but after that I was really paranoid while riding it. The tire only had a couple of thousand miles left on it, so I only used the plugged tire until I could replace it, maybe a week.

I'd have no trouble using a plugged tire on my car, but on a motorcycle you could be screwed if it fails. Just my opinion.

I also don't think Dynabeads would wear out a plug on the inside. My plug was covered with Dynabeads when the tire was removed.

Whoa!!!! It all depends..

If you know what caused the hole it would help to say what it was.. If the hole is small it would help to say so.

If the hole is in the treadarea, and not the side wall that makes a big difference.

If there is lumps ahead of and behind the hole you cut cords, and the tire is junk. Cords are like living tendonds on a human body, and move inside the tire.

If these are cut they lump up. If you use the tire they pull back from where they were cut.

If you didn't cut one and what ever passed by, then a proper plugging can work and last a long time, but should be checked and checked and checked again for leaking and the tire should be under suspect till a new one goes on.

You should check the tire cold and again cold... If you check it cold and then hot the psi should be over what it was cold. If ever you check it cold and when hot it is the same there is a leak.

Never ever ride on a low tire very far or very fast. The flexing in the sidewalls will create critical mass heat, and the tire may fail suddenly.

Never add air daily to a tire with a leak, that is begging for a blow out.

I believe you have the right idea....plug it, check it, go for a ride, wait on the new tire. As most people here have indicated, as long as you use common sense and plan on replacing the tire, you will be good to go.

I've plugged a tire that had lots of life left, checked it regularly like Mac mentioned, and got ~ 3K miles before replacing. It does depend on the initial damage.......
