Purolator oil filter wearing my rear brake line
If you use the yellow PureOne oil filters from Purolator, you'd better check your rear brake line.
I was changing my oil tonight and wiping everything down around the filter area before putting the new oil filter on. I felt a rough spot on my rear brake line and got down underneath to get a better look. My Purolator oil filter was rubbing a hole in my rear brake line! I think the gritty surface on the filter had been rubbing against the line and starting to wear a hole in it. I hope I caught it in time before any real damage is done, but wanted to warn others because I know this is a popular filter to use on the Nomads. The brake line cover in that area probably bought some time until I found it. I first wrapped the spot with a piece of heater hose and wire-tied it, but that was too thick to get the new filter on. So, I put a piece of corrugated hard plastic split wire loom on it and that allows enough room for the filter to fit. ![]() Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Purolator oil filter wearing my rear brake line
Sorry to hear about your problem. I will have to look at my filter and the brake line you are talking about. I have only used Kawasaki filters for my first two oil changes. I now have a Super Tech filter and a Bosch. Planned on using the Bosch next. I will have to keep an eye on it. Is it possible that you could move the brake line just a bit so they don't rub? Just wondering. Glad you posted this.

Superduty,
Is your brake line secured to the frame with cable ties? I have been using the Purolator without any issues, but the line is held to the frame with cable ties. Thanks for the heads up.

Thx for the heads 'up superduty, as I use the Pure One yellow filter. I checked mine and the brake line is zip locked to the frame but the hose still touches, but no big abrasion like you have. You might be able to put another zip lock near the abrasion, mine has enough room to pull it a little and clear that filter. :-)

I didn't check to see if I could put more zip-ties on it to pull it out of the way, but if does have all the factory ties on it along the arm, as near as I can tell. I'll see if I can secure it better. I think this happened pretty quick as I just have 9k miles on the bike. I put the Purolator on for the oil changes at 3k and 6k.
A response on another forum said that all the filters rub the hose there. And there is a protective skin of some sort of the line at that point. But I tend to think the gritty surface on the Purolator is causing more damage than a smooth surface filter would have. I had just not seen this mentioned here before so I thought I'd let others know about my experience. Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Thanks for the heads up Superduty! I also use the purolator filters, but hadn't noticed that anything was close enough to interfere. I'll check that out ASAP!

A couple more thoughts on the rubbing oil filter situation. You might try rubbing a good grease on the filter at the point it is bumping or rubbing on the brake line. Might also want to clean off the brake line and wrap a few layers of electrical tape aroung it. Just a couple of thoughts.
