It's Not An Option
By INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY | Posted Wednesday, July 15, 2009 4:20 PM PT

Congress: It didn't take long to run into an "uh-oh" moment when reading the House's "health care for all Americans" bill. Right there on Page 16 is a provision making individual private medical insurance illegal.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IBD Exclusive Series: Government-Run Healthcare: A Prescription For Failure

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When we first saw the paragraph Tuesday, just after the 1,018-page document was released, we thought we surely must be misreading it. So we sought help from the House Ways and Means Committee.

It turns out we were right: The provision would indeed outlaw individual private coverage. Under the Orwellian header of "Protecting The Choice To Keep Current Coverage," the "Limitation On New Enrollment" section of the bill clearly states:

"Except as provided in this paragraph, the individual health insurance issuer offering such coverage does not enroll any individual in such coverage if the first effective date of coverage is on or after the first day" of the year the legislation becomes law.

So we can all keep our coverage, just as promised — with, of course, exceptions: Those who currently have private individual coverage won't be able to change it. Nor will those who leave a company to work for themselves be free to buy individual plans from private carriers.

From the beginning, opponents of the public option plan have warned that if the government gets into the business of offering subsidized health insurance coverage, the private insurance market will wither. Drawn by a public option that will be 30% to 40% cheaper than their current premiums because taxpayers will be funding it, employers will gladly scrap their private plans and go with Washington's coverage.

The nonpartisan Lewin Group estimated in April that 120 million or more Americans could lose their group coverage at work and end up in such a program. That would leave private carriers with 50 million or fewer customers. This could cause the market to, as Lewin Vice President John Sheils put it, "fizzle out altogether."

What wasn't known until now is that the bill itself will kill the market for private individual coverage by not letting any new policies be written after the public option becomes law.

The legislation is also likely to finish off health savings accounts, a goal that Democrats have had for years. They want to crush that alternative because nothing gives individuals more control over their medical care, and the government less, than HSAs.

With HSAs out of the way, a key obstacle to the left's expansion of the welfare state will be removed.

The public option won't be an option for many, but rather a mandate for buying government care. A free people should be outraged at this advance of soft tyranny.

Washington does not have the constitutional or moral authority to outlaw private markets in which parties voluntarily participate. It shouldn't be killing business opportunities, or limiting choices, or legislating major changes in Americans' lives.

It took just 16 pages of reading to find this naked attempt by the political powers to increase their reach. It's scary to think how many more breaches of liberty we'll come across in the final 1,002.

Why is it we have poly tics and legal eagles who write like snakes in the grass?

Why do tax payers pay for snakes in the grass?

No one i know will just give me money for nuthin, so why do we give it to legal writers who are snakes in the grass?

From what I just read there IS snakes in the grass, and making things appear to look one whay, when they mean the exact opposite thing!

I am far to simple a man to understand that, and it just ends in anger. If there was a way I could catch and prove a legal writter wrote would be law such as this I would be very willing to skin him alive.

I can do that easy....

man makes the laws only any fool of any other creatures would laff , if they could laff....

Man calls sharks bad, bear and puma bad.. as if these creatures were bad.. These creatures haven't that sort of ideas...

Man thinks he is so friggin smart.... i don't think so. Man made 2 improvements in life the sick and the stone were the only things with were retained as weapons, A bunch of BS laws...

Money is a total joke and while I have some I give much of it away, when I have any....

Man is just sick with greed and power, and there is never enough of either to satisfy anyone with any amounts ever..

That almost makes me smart huh?

schoeney, I know this is just a report.... it isn't you ...mac

We have yet begun to see the absurdity of what is going on. Wait until we have to "live" within its confines.

The thing that burns me is that these turkeys are writing laws that the rest of us must follow but they exempt themselves from those same laws. They must be subject to the same health care as the rest of us if they change it. That is the only way it will really get 'fixed'.

These knotheads are enamored with social engineering via Congressional mandate and there is ZERO accountablity. Vote my ass. By then it is too late and if we do get rid of one knot-head we only get a new one in his place.

schoeney,thanks for posting this.
It just proves that the people that are supposed to be "looking out for our interests" don't care enough to even read the bills that they are voting into law. There are so many BS bills that shouldn't even be any of the federal goverment's business that they vote on.
I think it should be a requirement that all politicians read the Constitution, Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence. Maybe then they would have an idea of what this country was founded on and what we, the people that they are supposed to be serving, want.

Hard to believe we have reached this level of outright lying from our elected officials.
Bet a lot of people who lost their lives fighting for freedom and against socialism/communism/dictatorship etc are rolling over in their graves.

We got a notice at work that our healthcare coverage is changing in Jan. I am sure it is some sort of in house hybrid of this. My company has its nose so far up the govs ass it is sad. They keep trying to anticipate what the new healthcare policies will be so that they are 'ahead of the curve' instead of worrying about their people. It is a game of 'try be first so we get a bigger slice of the pie' kind of thing.

These fools are just like ugly whores, and we are the ones getting screwed..

Now maybe I am no nore than a long hair country hick, but I think one day there will be so much outrage that being a poly tic will mean a ride on a pole in tar with feathers, That idea went out of fashion, but it could return. I see no reason why I can't unless we can't get tar..

Then of course we get cake, which is to say bread crust crumbs.. Cake at the time was no more than wasted crusted off the oven floor..

Which might bring that Scotmans tool the Gee O tin e', a sort of special razor for the Elite..

There is more like me, just most of them don't have a computer or ride motorcycles..

Search NMLRA, Search Primitive Rondevouse, search Fur Trade Brigades.

Around here i am odd man out, but at Voos there can be 3,000 similar to me, maybe not as hat eatting mercury poisioned mad as me, but not to far off of it.

The Govt does fly overs on us and we have all their stinkin permits. They fear 3,000 flinlock musket totin shooters who can shoot, and hit what they want with a friggin flintlock the first time.

We have some great prizes like custom built flinters in rifles, pistols and smooth bore as first prizes, and then hawks, really nice ones, knives again realy nice ones in the $1,500.00 catagory sometimes, Lots and lots of other really nice things as well.

Other things are historicly accurate possibles bags, tooling, foods, milk paint, and anything related items.

I generally donate Trade Silver made for sale of museum quailty, in real silvers... either sterling or of coin, and the coin cost more while there is less silver. Sometimes i can save a date to show on the reverse, and if it shows it is 1780, due to the type coins I use to reproduce the item.

Regular folks sometimes fear me, and or do strange things..

Once I won a Fall turkey shoot with a smooth bore flint lock musket, shooting against all other modern shot guns.

After i won they all said i was cheating, and kept the dammned turkey too.

I didn't care about the turkey anyway. When I want a turkey i don't want the damn thing Frozen in the first place!
