Gel Pads

I am over 6ft and 270 pounds. I do a lot of long rides. Lately I can not stay on the bike long with out pain. I had a Gel Pad but seems very compressed compared to my wife's. I have tried the beads and that did not seem to work any better. I have looked at different seat reviews and it makes my head spin. I can not afford for the seat to push me and closer because of my height. Money is really tight now but I love to ride. Any suggestions on what to do. Should I just try a new Gel Pad if so what kind.

Gel Pads

Which gel pad did/do you have? I have used the amspecialtiesusa sheepskin gelpad on the stock seat for about a year before I got my Mustang. As you stated the push forward is a drawback fro those up us of taller stature; but it is tolerable because the price was right. I still have my gelpad and if the push factor becomes too much of an issue I can always drag it out of retirement to get a different feel.

I dont know if you have them already, but highway pegs give the opportunity to change the leg position and thereby the posture & seat loading characteristics for not a lot of dough.

No-Mad-Liz has a sheepskin gelpad for sale. You may want to pm her and ask about it.
It is in this thread;

+1 on the pegs!

I don't have any seat mods but I heard the gel pads get really hot. Maybe you won't have that problem where you are.

Gel Pads

I bought a gel seat made by saddleman on my last bike which was an st1100. I wasn't too impressed. I'm taking a multi week trip west in a number of weeks and decided to check into modifying the existing seat. I got an idea from a friend of mine to go to this local upholstery store where he had memory foam put in. He raved about the results of his seat.

Anyway I went there the other day and he wanted $75 for each seat but did both for $125. I only took it for a ride for about 45 minutes, which isn't much of a trip, by my first impressions were positive in comfort. The procedure is to take the cover off the seat and take a carving knife and cut out foam just above the seat frame and leave the surface foam that gives the shape and then insert the memory foam between the seat frame and the remaining stock foam that he left in place. He puts the seat back together and it looks like it did before he worked on it.

Again my first impressions are good. It seems to me that I feel like I sit more into the seat than with the stock foam when your on it but does seem to be more comfortable. If the weather breaks and I get a chance to take the nad out longer, I follow up with a better review.

I'd also like to add that the guy that worked on the seat only got people back complaining about the gel iserts, has them in stock, but doesn't get complaints about the memory foam.

Gel Pads

I bought the propad gel with sheepskin for about $150 and I really like it. Its cool in the summer, warm in the winter. Do sit about 3/4-1 inch higher. Pushes you forward maybe the same amount. its worth the money for me. Mustang will be in the future someday.

Keep your eyes open for a used Mustang seat. They can be found at great prices. I found a lightly used one with a backrest for $350 shipped. It's been a great modification to the bike.

Gel Pads

As a follow up on the memory foam I had put in the stock seat......

Rode over 250 miles today. No butt fatigue.

(No jokes here. All right maybe 1 or 2).

I'm extremely happy with the way the seat now performed. It seems I sit a little deeper into the seat now that the memory foam replaced some of the stock foam. You don't feel like you're sitting on a marshmallow but you can tell there some of that hardness is gone.

Riders come in all sizes and shapes as well as riding styles. Some like to sit more upright, some like to lean back and some like to lean forward. As a result I realize everyone may not come to the same conclusion about what's best for comfort.

I'm 5ft. 10in. and weigh in at about 210. And I have to say I think it was money well spent and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

As far as gel seats, as I said before a Saddleman seat on my st1100 did nothing for me.

I've sat on mustang and cobra seats, not on a Nomad though, and they didn't do it for me.

Again, different strokes for different.........riders.

I would try the pegs first, see if that allows you to move into some different positions... i have never liked the pads much. I did end up buying a mustang seat and it did put me closer to the tank, but well worth the money for the comfort
