GPS Mount

Has anyone tried using an automobile GPS on there bike ? I know I can't let it get wet but I don't know about the vibration or the best way to mount it. A GPS for a bike cost way yo much. Thank You for any ideas or comments that you may have, I have a 2009 Nomad 1700.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 650 on my bike with no vibration issues. I mounted it on a RAM mount between the handlebar clamps. I bought the GPS used for $100. If you send me a PM with your email address I can send you some photos. Cant post them on here, dont know how.

A "car" GPS will work just fine on a motorcycle, as long as you keep it dry. My Garmin Nuvi 550 is waterproof, is rated as "motorcycle friendly" and cost less than $250 (a year ago).

Best way to mount it is with a RAM mount. they probably make a cradle to fit your GPS, but you didn't mention the type, so I can't help you any further than that.

Never had a GPS but way back when I did have a CB radio on bike and used a shower cap to cover it up when things got wet. I have seen smaller covers with elastic bands aroun the bottom that may work for a GPS unit.

I have a Garmin Streetpilot 330c. Works fine. The ram mount for it is touchy. If you don't get it in correctly it can pop off. Did that once at 35 mph and survived well. Now use the charger cord as a security line.

I mounted my TomTom with the included windshield mount and it did fine when I went to the SENR rally. It did loosen up on the way home. Just tightened the wheel back on it and it was good to go. I plan to get RAM mount one day.

I use a car GPS. the Nuvi 750. they all should work fine in ram mounts. if your really worried about water, they make an aqua box. $50 bucks. put your GPS inside and seal it up. the outer flex screen lets yo touch the GPS screen. I was thinking about picking one up for days where I just know I'm going to get stuck in rain. here is a link

I have a Tom Tom Go 89$ and I mount it with the suction cup supplied rather on the fairing or on the tank. no problem at all.

5 years ago, I got the Tom Tom Rider specifically for the bike ($1200). I now use that one in my truck ???

Garmin NUVI 360 here...bought a RAM mount like others. No problem. I have taken it on several trips. If it starts to rain I just put it in my saddlebag.

I have the garmin 255. The stock suction cup holds quite well on the Nomad windshield. I made a zip on case out of rubberized nylon that should keep it dry. In case the suction cup let go I have a short tether on the case that attaches to the handle bar.

RAM mount is the best way to go. Like someone said just pop it off it if starts to rain.

I have used both TomTom and Magellan GPS's without any problems. Use the same Ram mount for both except for the cradle. Both work just fine.

I use the "wife GPS" meathod. She has a paper map of the area we roaming are in. Yesterday on our little trip it flew out of her hands we missed a turn and took a two hour "detour". Not a bad thing. But she is now insisting on getting one to mount on the bike. Looking a the TomTom Go630 and RAM mount.

In addition to a GPS (Ram mounted); I always carry a "Gazetteer" map of the state I am riding in.

For those that don't know what this is... it is a map book of each state whereby it is gridded-out showing every single public road in each section.

The details are far beyond what regular maps show; and is how I find all the "great-roads" to ride that many others never take the time to discover.

Typically most WalMarts carry them.

Just a suggestion. I don't think you'll regret owning one.

I use a Garmin Nuvi in a RAM Mount that cost about $50 online from RAM. For wet weather I just pull a sandwich sized Zip Loc bag over it and close it up around the RAM mount. Have never had a problem with either the mount or getting wet...and there is plenty of rain in the Pacific Northwest to test it.
