Whats with you yankees?

I haven't ridden in PA yet so don't know what was wrong with those dummies! Everywhere else I've ridden, most everyone waves or nods if not able to wave. I'm originally from Michigan and I know for a fact that they wave there. I was there a couple of weeks ago and was riding my brother's Harley. Everyone I waved to waved back. Of course, people from Michigan are NOT yankees! We're Mid-Westerners dammit! :) :)

In NY we wave, but you can't see it because it's our middle finger. :) Out in Iowa, most people wave, but if I am trying to pay attention to what I am doing, I don't wave back.

I'll probably take some shots here but here it goes any how. I don't get this waving thing with people on bikes. I don't wave at other Monte Carlo drivers when I drive my car. Why should I wave at total strangers when I'm on my bike? I think it's silly. I don't wave.

Okay, well, here's your first shot. I wave because I enjoy being on the bike so much - I wave at others on their bikes as if to say 'Hey you out in the wind too - have a great day'. That being said if they don't wave back it's no biggie to me. Now that wasn't too painful a shot was it? ;)

Jeep Wrangler Owners wave to one another too. I know because I own one.
There is an understanding among Motorcyclist. For example, I was on the side of the road cause I received a 911 call from my wife, 2 bikers at two separate times pulled over to see if all was OK. Its a courtesy extended because of the disadvantage/advantage we have on motorcycles. I like it makes me feel better about life.
So, Dave if you feel that waving is not for you, look at it this way, why not give a courtesy wave to the person who recognized you. This way you can ride on knowing you contributed to making his day better.

Here's your second shot. As Unwind said, howdy and good to share the road with a fellow rider. Here's a great story/explanation.

Agree with the comment about crotch rocket riders that don't wave...I think most are too afraid to let go...

In NC, almost everyone waves or nods...we are just having a good time and want to share our joy

Sorry Fish! I didn't mean to indict all PA riders. I was just giving a tongue-in-cheek hard time to the ones mentioned that didn't wave. Are you anywhere near Pittsburgh? I get there occasionally. If I get the chance I will look you up. You can give me three lashes with a wet noodle and then I will buy you a beer, or two, or three!

I'd estimate the wave rate around here about 70%, HD or not. Less in city traffic of course. Interesting to guess who will or won't. Not always sure why I do or don't, its not automatic. Usually try to return one though.

Hi Dave! First of all, I'm not going to take a shot at you. I don't thing anyone here at KawaNOW will probably take a real shot at you either. Let me explain. When I started riding some 40 years ago I didn't know diddly about waving. I noticed other riders waving at me so I started waving back. When I got the chance I asked an old biker what the deal was (he was only in his 30's but I thought he was old!). He told me it was just a way to acknowledge that we were enjoying the same activity and that even if we were strangers we did have something in common. Since then, if I have the chance to wave I do. If I'm busy, like riding the dragon, I'm keeping both hands on the bars. If others wave at me I'm happy and I'll wave back. If they choose not to wave, it doesn't matter. I'm still happy.

So, if anyone wants to wave, that's OK.
Likewise, if they don't want to wave, that's OK.

Sometimes I get a wave from a cager. I figure he must be rider too and just can't help himself. In fact, caught myself doing it once, maybe twice.

In my neck of the woods we generally give waves on the highway and not so much in the city.....Usually too many bikers on the road for that in town......
