With Nico's doctor bucks, I think it should be at least $50!

What's your take?

Nico,

I had the same symptom on my 2000 1500 FI Nomad. Going down the freeway and suddenly it was like someone turned the key off. Initially it would come back on by itself. Indicator lights on the console would do a power on cycle (remember mine is FI). Finally it got to where I would have to coast to the side and after a few tries (cycling the ignition switch and hitting the starter) it would crank up and run OK.

Mine was the battery connection. Don't just look at them because they may look OK even with some corrosion.

The Fix. Take apart, thoroughly clean, and reassemble.

1) Disconnect both terminals. Negative first.
2) Fish the nuts out of the battery post.
3) Soak all parts (terminals, cable connector, bolts, nuts) in a solution of baking soda and water. It will create foam and bubble as it neutralizes the acid.
4) Sand all contact surfaces with a wet/dry type sand paper about 320 grit
5) With a small flat blade screwdriver or other similar tool chip away any remaining corrosion. Be sure to do the underside of the battery terminal where the nut goes.
6) Clean again with another solution of baking soda and water. Then rinse with clear water.
7) Thoroughly dry. If available use compressed air to remove any excess water.
8) Re assemble (Positive terminal first, Negative second)

Good Luck.

=======================

If you loose ignition the engine will still take in the fuel and air but not ignite it as you roll to a stop with it in gear. So you would be pumping unburned fuel/air out the exhaust

I think the loose battery cable will normally cause it to pop and sputter when you accelerate, rather than just going dead like that.

If you have a loose/flaky ground, it can cause all types of issues, especially with microprocessors, like...oh I don't know, maybe an ECU.

OK.. cleaned he cables... used Coke.. lol

One last symptom I forgot to mention:

On a REAL slow 1st or 2nd gear right hand turn with a lot of lean it will cut out for a second and almost die.. not every time, but often enough.

Could still be any of the electrical things we mentioned. Also, just for yocks, I'd check the wires running over the top rear of the valve cover of the rear cylinder. Notorious place for the wires to rub through.

What's your take?

A couple of years ago I was coming home on the expressway doing 80 to 85 mile an hour and the bike died. It turns out I was low on gas and at 80 to 85 MPH it could not suck enough gas up to keep the bike going at high speed. Once I slowed down the bike ran okay and I went another 5 miles till I found a gas station and filled it up. So my vote goes to a gas delivery problem.
