I am new owner of sweet looking Nomad 1600. It has V&H exhaust. I want to make the bike the best it can be:
1) Eliminate the popping during deceleration. Sounds horribly sloppy. I heard put a marble in an air tube. But I want to add an air-intake system, too? and Commander 5, maybe an auto tuner by commander 5? Do I need someone else to do it? Or can I do the tune hook up myself if I buy auto tuner with the programmer? Is there a certain order of hooking this all up with that marble fix included? Is there anyone near Fort Smith Arkansas that I can meet with about this stuff. Any advice on what to do to my bike? I want it running strong and efficient! It sounded like it needed 6th gear when riding 2up at 85 mph on highway. What air intake? Do I need auto tuner with Commander 5? How does dyno testing fit in with this? 2 up @85mph on the highway? I imagine you DO need a sixth gear! You need to be on a 1700 Vulcan if you're going to run that hard 2 up. The 1700s have a sixth gear that is practically useless below an indicated 70mph.
Can't help you much on the advice other than a fuel processor will solve your popping issue. Well, I can recommend chucksterscustoms.com for your intake. I bought one from him earlier this year for a 1700 I owned. Great guy to deal with.

Get yourself some free flowing baffles, intake, and tuner. Will free up enough power to pull pretty decent....6th is overdrive....you'd have to go inside the engine and do work to get enough 'umph' to really use 6th....to pull a load....
Keep her in 5th, then on flat roads or on downhills, you can use 6th some....

DL, he doesn't have a sixth gear. He's on a 1600 and wishes he had sixth. I suggested a 1700

Thanks for correcting me, I just scanned stuff....been out riding alot lately.... Yea, even the Vaquero, that has a 6th gear, on pulling heavy loads and hills in 6th, you gotta be Ivanized.... My Vaquero, 6th gear was useless, unless riding solo, which is what I do. After Ivanizing, and custon intake and exhaust, Loading her down, she'll pull up a really good grade, but you gotta keep your revs up some.... Speaking from experience, saddlebags full, all my rolls/bags on the rear, going up and down the mountains in Oregon, I'll shift down to 5th every-once-in-a-while.... For the 1600, get Chucksters air cleaner, V&H bagger duals, and a efi controller. put in some iridium plugs, install the coasters, block off the vacuum lines, nice little perk is some Dynatec coils and some good plug wires....then go to a dyno-tune specialist....you can get enough 'beans' to where you can have a decent enough power. With that, with a good tuning, you can get about 80-ish horses....something you can really feel going down the road...

Dont worry about the RPM's. The 1500's and 1600's love rpm's. They dont like to be lugged around.
On the 1700, I added the Ivans, a K&N filter, and the V&H mufflers and 6th did have to be used with the higher speeds. Put the stock mufflers back on with the Ivans and it's stout in 6th from 55 and up with my 400 pound azz on it. Some engines like a little back pressure.
