Car tyres on a nomad

I have been thinking about fitting a car tyre on the back of my 1500 Nomad for some time.I have researched plenty, and the overwhelming majority of American riders who use them,on various bikes, are happy with them.I have seen many video's of floorboard scraping on many bikes, but none on a Nomad.I am yet to see one lean over enough,to scrape the boards,or pipes in my case.Has anyone fitted them, and can you give me a bit of feedback please.Pissed of with buying 3-4 tyres a year, and the hassle, and cost of fitting them.

I ran a car tire for a few years, It was pretty good for the most part, but does have a bit of a learning curve to get used to, and you have to find the happy tire pressure that works best for your bike. I think mine was around 28psi if I remember correctly.
I have scraped the floor boards a few times on my bike and have ridden down the Blue Ridge Parkway a few times, being able to keep up with everyone in the group easily.
I used a Vredestein truck tire, that was a 175/50/16 . Some fellas used a 195mm wide tire, but I think they had to grind a bit of the swingarm on the 1500,s thats why I used the 175mm width. It just cleared everything under the fender with no modifications. It wore very well and I had it on for about 4-5 seasons. It still had plenty of tread left on it when I switched back to a bike tire. I replaced it because the rubber was getting hard and starting to slide a bit in the rain. I use the Shinko tires now and find them pretty good all around, and priced very well here in Canada. Plus they are one of the few brands available in whitewalls.

There is a lot of old posts buried here somewhere, as there were quite a few of us that used to run the car tires. It all depends on how good you can use the search feature here.

Watch that video with the Gold Wing Mick and pay attention to the rear tire when he goes into a corner. It comes up on the edge of the tire and that doesn't seem very safe to me............I had a flat aspect motorcycle tire on a Norton and when I got to pushing it in the curves the back tire would get on the edge and "skip" sideways. Scared the crap out of me a number of times. I'll stick with bike tires for bikes and car tires for cars.

There is my problem.I made my own towbar, that fits up inside the mudguard, and is bolted through the upper subframe.I am not sure if i could even fit a 175 in there.

I've been running a CT for years, and have no complaints, and have drug the pipes a few times on my 1600........, But, loke Steve said, there is a re-learning curve you have to go thru.

Hear is an article from road and track on CTs and motorcycles, give it a read.

For what it's worth...

I ran a 175/60/16 Federal tire for 21000 miles, and passed it on to someone else who wanted to try a CT but $ were an issue.

I then ran a 185/70(or 75)/16 Continental truck/van tire until the sidewall got sliced by a pothole, about 8500 miles.

Sliced the tire and was leaving the next day on the bike for Myrtle Beach. So I ended up putting a bike tire back on, and haven't even remotely thought about going back to a ct.

I don't want to start an oil thread or anything like that.

Can you run a ct, yes.

Is it safe, yes.

Can you still do all the things you did before, yes, you'll find a way to compensate.

I personally like the feel and responsiveness of a bike tire.

I even went with a 140/90/16 on the rear of the Nomad, this last time. And I love how much quicker it responds with that narrow tire.

So, do you like Coke or Pepsi?

Where does one get a CT installed? From what I hear most MC shops won't do it. I'm going to be installing a CT on my VStrom DL650/sidecar rig.

CTs are somewhat common in the Rocket 3 world, the models with the 240 rear tire. I've considered it but with some of the new hardened compounds MC tire manufacturers are using, I'm hoping I won't have to. I just saw an ad for a new Dunlop tire, I believe the Elite 4, that is claiming upwards of 20K miles on a rear. I think it is in one of the current MC mags I have.

I had the Dunlop Elite 3 on my Victory it came with them. i got 14,000 on them just got new Elite 4 on the bike. have to see what they get only have 1500 miles on them so far. They handle great. I'm running a Avon Cobra on the front. Both are radials.

I ran a car tie on my nomad years ago, but with the new developments on MC tires I see no reason to run a car tire.

I had the CTs installed by a independent MC shop.

40,000m, as apposed to 5,000m max,is good enough reason for me to consider it.
