Jumo started my bike and it dies when I remove the cables
So here is my situation, I go to my bike after work put the key in. The lights come on and go through the normal power on checks. When I hit the start button I get a click and the bike wont start.
I hooked cables to the positive in the batters and the grounding stud, the bike starts fine but as soon as I remove the jumper cables the bike stops running. Any idea what the heck is going on? I need to get the bike 45 minutes down the road to my house from work. Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Could be any number of things, but first thought is the ground connection on the battery. Might as well try the simple stuff first.
You said you connected the jumper positive to the battery but the jumper negative somewhere else. If the ground connection on the battery was loose or corroded, the bike would die as soon as you removed the jumper because there would be no good return path to the battery. While you're at it, clean and tighten both battery connections. If that doesn't fix it, then we can look at other stuff.

Check the other end of the ground wire. Or you have a bad battery.

but I would guess it is the battery. It is done and needs replacement. Not knowing the year of bike and age of the battery it is really hard to say for sure. All kinds of things happen with old batteries. Have you checked the voltage and charge? But always wise to ask since they cost quite a bit.

So the battery tested good, is the next step the stator?

If the battery checks good (voltage and current carrying capability) then the jumpers are meaningless. Unless your battery connection to the bike is bad and the jumpers are replacing the bad battery connection. Recheck your battery and your connections to the bike. The only way the bike will stop running is if there is no battery in the circuit. If the stator is bad its bad with and without the jumpers connected.

Battery Issues
The same thing happened to me when I had my Nomad. It was the battery. Two thoughts come to mind. Either the battery is shorted out internally and there is no connection between positive and negative or it just has low voltage and needs to be replaced. I believe often times on fuel injected models the ecu has to see proper voltage or it will shut down.

How was the battery tested?
Did you take it to the store, and they put their machine on it? Then it hasn't been tested correctly. Charge the battery until the charger goes into maintenance mode, and remove the charger. Attach your voltmeter and see what it reads, if less than 13.xx it's bad, plain and simple. If it has 13.xx volts install into the bike. Attach your voltmeter and hit the starter switch? What does it drop to, and how far back does it come without the bike running? If it drops to less than 12.xx volts, it' toast. If it comes back to less than 13.xx volts, it's toast.

My wife's Suzuki C90 BOSS had a similar issue recently after sitting for a while. All the lights and gauges came on no problem, but it would never turn over. I charged the battery up on a tender for a few hours, but same result. Replaced battery, problem fixed...

So I just had the battery on a charger settings were 12v 6A for several hours and the batter will not charge past 12.8 volts. Looks like I'll be grabbing a new one tonight.
