What size and model of bike? Go to gadgets page and look at marbelizing. May need a tune if efi.

It's normal. You had it with the stock pipes and you just never noticed because it wasn't loud. If you do a search the forum for solutions; there are a few. Ivan's tune and marbling come to mind.

thanks for all the info, from reading all the comments it seems that a reflash of the ECM cures many problems and gives the bike a wake up call. I live in NY so when I return from vacation I'll take a ride up to Ivan's shop and have it done
