The 1700 has 2 oil pumps, and each pump has a screen to catch trash before grinding it up through the geroters. The screens sit crosswise in the sump and held by a large cap, one on each side of the engine. Picture below.
All Vulcan 800, 900, 1500, 1600 have the same screen, only one because they have one pump, and they were easy to access. The 1700 requires some disassembly to get to the plugs, left side behind the bottom coolant pipe and right side behind the frame section.
