Ticking noise

Hi,

I have an issue with my 03 1500fi with 13500 miles and hope someone on this site can help me out. Two days ago after I rode for 35 miles the bike sat for about an hour. When I went riding again I noticed a tick tick sound (Tinny sounding) not the normal tick you get. After about 10 minutes the sound went away. I rode yesterday morning and everything seemed normal. Later in the day when I started the bike the noise was back. And again after about 10 minutes of hwy driving the noise went away. So I think to myself maybe the oil is low. I checked and there was none in the site glass. I ran to the store and bought oil and did an oil change. After I changed the oil I took the bike for a ride and again I had the noise. So I drained 12oz of oil and added 12oz of Marvel Mystery oil and took the bike for a ride. The noise has gone away. When I checked the site glass after the bike sat for an hour there was no oil in the site glass. So the 12oz I had removed for the marvel oil was put back in and now the oil is half way in the glass.

So where did all that oil go. The base of the jugs above the tranny case is wet but not enough for all of that oil.

I need help

Thanks,
Lenny

You are checking the site glass with the bike level, right?

Hopefully you are not checking the oil while the bike is on the kick stand. You have to have the bike level to check the oil.

you didn't mention how much oil was actually left when you did the oil change.
What was the exact amount missing ?

Guys,

A) The bike was upright and level
B) 2.5 gallons came out.

I'm sure mean 2 1/2 quarts.
Is there oil in the right dog bowl?
Or oil on the floor by the kick stand?

Hi,

My bad on the gallons should be quarts

No oil on the floor by the kick stand.
And a trace of oil in the dog bowl.

I thought it might be the seal around the clutch pushrod.
If it had a lot of oil in the bowl I'd say that is where some of it went.
But your talking about almost a quart.
If it was burning that amount it would be smoking like a freight train.
I would think it has to be leaking from somewhere.
Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in.
Good luck.

With that much oil leaking it should be showing up somewhere. If you were burning it you'd know it. I would start looking for drip marks on concrete any chance you get. Not just sitting but more importantly while running. Thing about oil is it won't just vaporize. Gotta be coming out/going somewhere. The guru's will need to help you on this one.

I did see a thread by you when you first got the bike that you had a question about the oil use or something in that line. sounds like it is an going issue with it. As stated in your other thread using T6 does seem to burn a lot of it. I did notice it on my bike that the T6 needed to be topped off before the next oil change. Hopefully you are putting in 3.5qts when you do the oil change.

Here is the thread I am talking about:

The oil filter holds several ounces.

Did you fill it before installing it?

The noise is most likely one of your HLA's, don't sweat it. Sometimes one will get dirty and not pump up right away. One of mine is like that.

As far as oil usage, what kind of riding do you do?

Highway riding can use some oil. My bike will be about a quart low after 750 highway miles.

It's the same issue that the BUBF's had with the piston skirts being too short. MaKAw tried to correct it when they designed the 1500/1600 from 96 up, but didn't quite go far enough.

Check your oil a half hour after every ride for a while and see if you lose any.
