KawaTanker is shutting off

I have had an issue with my '99 shutting down while riding. I think I have 2 issues, one that I know how to fix, the other no idea.

The starter relay needs to be cleaned or replaced, that is the one I know how to do. The other seems that the ignition switch (where the key goes in) has developed some play in it. What I mean by that is I have to turn the key to a position between the normal start position and accessory position for it to stay on. Anybody have an idea about how to fix this issue?

As always, thank you for your responses, both technical advise and smart@ss ones

Hey Ron, I had a similar issue a few years back. For me it was simply worn cabling connections at the ignition switch (I have a barrel key located on the speedo nacelle). I re-soldered and re-dressed everything and no problem since.

Thanks gentlemen. Appreciate the insight on the parts place. I'll have to go look at the cable/wire.

Hope you are well Daryl, been too long my friend.

It has been too long man. With all of my travels, I haven't made it back to the SE since 2009. Would be too cool to connect sometime.

Thanks Greg...I wasn't feeling any love until I saw your comment. Now I feel at home

The KawaTanker gets the school/home rides and a few other short jaunts. Beemer gets the long haul miles. Tanker has 88K and the Beemer 150K now. I suppose some day I should retire both and get two different ones but I almost have them both the way I want them...or it could be I'm too cheap to get a new one.

I hear you on the cost of replacing bikes. Geez... It can be an expensive proposition.

Well, definitely traveling a lot. And oh yes, making the big bucks! Dozens and dozens of dollars!
After living and working in Las Vegas for the last eight months, I'm glad to be working from Colorado again. While I don't post a lot, I do read the forum most every day. I only post when I have something relevant to say...which we all see is not very often!

Ok, update on the KawaTanker. Decided since it was raining and the Beemer was getting a new clutch, I'd dive into trying to find out what was wrong with KT and not wanting to run right.

Well, it didn't want to start. Would crank but not fire. So I decided to drain the tank, check the fuel filter (clear), change the plugs and see if that helped. It cranked over but wouldn't fire. Stepped away from it a little bit to scratch my head and decided to try it again. The relay tripped and I lost all power.

Off to the auto parts place for some electric contact cleaner. Came back and cleaned the contacts on the relay, blew them dry with the compressor, and hooked it all back up. Nothing. No power at all.

Battery reads 12.7-12.9 on the meter. I'm thinking the relay is shot cause I don't even get lights now.

Sounds like the ignition switch is bad.
