Running Rich - Poor MPG

I bought my 07 1600 with V&H Baggers, single side open filter intake, and a V&H FuelPak FI tuner. In my opinion, the bike is running rich. At stop lights, idle, etc you can smell that it's fat. Plus the inside of the exhaust is black as the ace of spades. You can't touch it without looking like you stuck your finger in charcoal soot. And finally, I'm LUCKY to get 28-30 MPG. I've emailed V&H and tried the setup the recommended for the FuelPak and got no improvement. DO I need a different tuner? Any other suggestions??

The V&H FuelPak is probably the least user-friendly tuner I have ever seen. Way too complex for most people. You really have to know what you're doing to properly dial one in.

I'd disconnect it and ride the bike for a few days and see if there is any change. It won't hurt anything.

Check out this new one from Dobeck Performance. You can adjust it as you ride. Just have to put a o2 sensor in the exhaust pipe.

Is it true that with the Dobeck you lose the stored information every time you shut off the ignition and the unit has to "relearn" on every ride?

Perhaps try scrubbing out the throttle body first with carb cleaner before you make any changes. My bike used to smell rich with sooty pipes when it got dirty, after cleaning I'd be in the low 40's for mpg.

So if I'm reading this right you can add this to any fuel processor , such as my PCIII? Do you need two O2 sensors with the true dual setup?

No it relplaces the PCIII. As far as the o2 sensors, I think you only need 1, but don't quote me on that.
