Wheel Bearings...

So I hear/feel what I seems to be a bearing starting to go bad. I feel it a little more when I lean into a left hand turn. I figure the safest bet is to just replace all bearings. Has anyone done this before? I obviously know that I need 2 bearings and seals for each wheel. I was looking at a parts diagram and just wondered if there was anything else I needed before I tear into this job. What is this "rear hub shock damper" thing I see in the middle of the hub? Any chance that is something that needs replaced due to normal wear? My bike has about 25,000 miles.

Thanks for your help!

Are you sure it is not your tires? Front tires have a habit of howling in the corners when they get cupped. Mine was more noticeable on the left than right hand corners.

Just got new tires last fall. Probably less than 4000 miles on them. Thanks though.

I think its your tires as well. I thought the same thing the first time I heard it on my bike. These bikes are known for that tire noise.
Nothing should need replacing in the shock dampener, its just a rubber cushion between the wheel and the final drive.

Doesn't matter. Don't discount the tires as a cause.

I agree with these other guys, I have a couple 70's KZ1000's and they both still have the original wheel bearings in them. How is you rear tire balanced ? Weights? or Dyna Beads?

Weights. And now that I look at it, some of them appear to have fallen off and/or "relocated" to a different place on the wheel!

You could just pull them off and use the dyna beads. You can add them through the valve stem. Only need 2 ounces per tire. I use em and really like them. They keep the tire balanced as it wears too.

Found a local dealer that sells the Dyna Beads. Gonna go grab some and give it a shot.

Thanks!

My front tire makes noise also, and i was sure i had a bad wheel bearing. Cycle shop said bearings were good. My bike has 27,000 miles. I can barely see the cupping on my front tire, but it is there.

Make sure you pull those weights off. Dynabeads are intended for use without other weights.
