I have a 2006 1600 Nomad for a yeaar now, Get 36 mpg on highway consistantly. Is that good or bad? Only mod I have is V&H baggers, everything else is stock.

It depends on how you ride and where you ride.
I don't ride much stop and go. Mostly secondary highways. Ride about 5 over the limit but very tame on the throttle. Riding one up I average 40-42. All stock except debaffled exhaust.

That is about average for a stock Nomad.

Low side of average without a fuel processor. About average with one. That's about what I got with one of Chucksters intakes, fuel processor and V&H pipes. I'm "husky" and was pretty heavy on the throttle.

That doesn't seem to far off, How far can you go on a tank of gas? I can get 180 miles a tank anytime except winter, and Ive gone just over 200 miles a few times. Thats starting with a full tank and running it down pretty low.

With a rear tire needing replaced, I got about 36 mpg out of the last tank. Same setup (performance wise) as you, stock with V&H baggers. I suspect, once I get a slightly larger tire, that will go up slightly. That's 70/30 between 1-up and 2-up, and I TRY to be easy on the throttle...

Nomad Mileage
I get about 150-160 miles a tank (when light comes on) and if I baby it 170 miles. I'm a 300lb guy and don't ride very tame. Sounds like I'm in the ballpark though. I want to install a fuel processor and also modify the intake.

I just filled up after a 123 mile ride I took Friday. I averaged almost 35 MPG. I do have the Cobra FI2000R fuel processor. If I didn't have it I would have gotten 40 or better.

If your getting that far when the light comes on I'd say your doing pretty good.

I have had my '08 Nomad for a couple of months now. I have checked 4 tanks of gas. Two of them were 35 mpg and two were 38 mpg. I must admit I am a bit disappointed. The FJR i had prior to this was consistenly in the low 40's, and the ST1300 I had before that was mid 40's.
The Nomad is the better passenger hauler though, and that's why I got it. I am hoping that I will eventually be able to add a gas sipper to the stable for my one up riding, which is mostly commuting. |

Yes, it is odd that the relatively low RPM Nomad with it's sedate engine tune isn't better on mileage. That is really about my only complaint about my 07 Nomad other than I wish it had ABS.
I have a personally developed open intake on the RH side only, a Cobra FI2000R and stock exhaust with baffles removed. I do run a Dunlop 160/80/16 rear tire so my speedo and odometer are a bit closer to actual than those with the OEM 170/70/16 or the 180/70/16 that many run. I have gotten as high as 46 mpg on the Nomad but generally its 38-40 mpg which is a tweak better than the average guy but still a bit disapointing. It doesn't make a bit of dif to my Nomad if I run reg-mid or prem fuel and usually I run reg as I don't have the ping problem that many report. I do notice a 3-4 mpg improvement if I stumble across non gasohol like last summer out west but that seems to be the only way fuel effects my bike. I am pretty smooth and easy in ridding style so I do a little better on tires, brakes and fuel mileage that some. But my wing which is 1840 cc 6 cyclinder (vs the 07 Nomad's 1530cc 2 cylinder) consistently delivers 43-46 mpg and if I am on secondeary roads one up and careful to stay bellow 65mph I regularly get 50 mpg. 2 years ago heading out west with Ponch I got 56mpg on some pure regular but then Jim's BMW was over 60mpg on that run so I didn't get to feel too smug. Even my 2.3liter Scion Xb automatic will give 34-35mpg on the hiway. Heck, the 405HP Vette convert gives me 28mpg but I do have to run prem. So fuel mileage is a legit complaint, but actually a small one when you consider smiles per miles!

Don't know if there was any engine difference between the Classic & Nomad but my 05 1600 Classic with bags & shield averaged mid 30's around town & 40-41 highway. I did have Caddman air, Hard Kromes,TFI & a "fun" right hand!

I get 40 mph and all I did was debaffle the stock exhaust. I run 65 down the freeway.
