Why does it bounce??

I was wondering if there is some reason why my tach needle tends to bounce a bit at idle and not just hold steady.????
Any one know??/

Because your tach needle is bouncing off your pot belly?!

Mines a Barons and the instructions say "Typically, bouncing tachs are caused by 3 reasons. On some bikes, a low idle can cause the tach to bounce up to 1000 RPM. .... The next major cause for tack bounce is poor connections/ground...."

They don't say what the third reason is but on a Barons tach, not sure if all tachs are the same, you can hook the Red and Blue wire together and connect to either the coil positive or any other switched positive power. I read somewhere that by connecting to the coil it makes the needle jump at idle, if connected to a switched positive power source then the needle does not jump. Who knows, mine is connected to the coil and bounces, I'm to lazy to try reconnecting it.

I had a Harley tach on my Nomad and it didn't bounce. Assuming your idle is rock steady, I'd either check your connections or buy a new tach.

Has the needle always bounced, or is this something that has just started?

My needle has bounced since day one (and it's been many days ), and it bounces about 50-100 RPMs at idle . I always assumed it to be reading correct, and that the 50-100 RPM variance was from the V-Twin lope. Any 2 cylinder, single pin crank engine is not going to be a smooth idling engine, and the tach will reflect that.

Thxs for the help. I'll check the connections.
I don't recall it ever bouncing like it is now, which indicates it might be getting worse which could mean connection is getting worse.
