First big trip??

I just got back from a 700 mile round trip on my 2001 Nomad. I put a seat pad on the seat, which helped a little but the worst thing about the trip was my seat. But by the time I got back I was about done with riding. The one day mileage was 330 miles. Anyone got any good cheap ideas what to don with the seat. Isn't there someone out there that rebuilds seats??? Let me know.

I've used and have success with Mustang seats on my Nomad and Harley.

You didn't say if your seat is stock, but if so....most Nomad riders have a hard time with those and replace them with an aftermarket seat. Forget the idea of a "cheap fix" however. A good aftermarket seat (there are many brands to choose from...(Mustang, Corbin, Ultimate, Russell Day-Long, etc.) will run you anywhere from $400 to $1000. There are some used ones around on ebay for less....keep your eyes open. The BEST seat is the one that works for you....its very subjective.

I replaced my stock Nomad seat with a Mustang and it was far superior to stock. I am currently awaiting a Corbin seat for my Voyager. A backrest on any seat you get will also greatly enhance your riding position and allow you to kick back and just barely touch the handlebars instead of holding on to them tight to hold yourself up. Good luck....you will greatly enjoy a better seat for sure. Check out all their websites...some come as they are, others will customize them to fit you personally (Corbin, Russell)...and remember, you get what you pay for.....

Meancitycycles in maiden nc does mods starting at 50.00 and goes up to 350.00. Had mine done and seems to be more comfy than the mustang i had on my last bike. They can move you up, down, forward or back and use double layers of memory foam and/or gel pads. Height, weight and inseam is used in their process so it's more or less custom fit for you.

You already have a cheap seat on your bike. What you need is a better seat, and better seats cost money.

I did my first long road trip, 750 miles from Oklahoma City to Indianapolis over labor day weekend on my Vaquero with a Mustang seat. If it weren't for the torrential downpour of Hurricane Isaac aftermath that I encountered in Missouri, I could have ridden another 750 miles and been perfect.

There was another thread here somewhere that does seats in Florida for a $100.00. I think it was called Spencers.

Ohio,

The stock seats are not the most comfortable. For me, I had good luck with the stock and a beaded seat cover until this year. There are people who have added a airhawk pad and been happy.

I was ready to take my seat to have it modified but came up on a deal for an Ultimate seat. Still haven't been able to try it out as it rained the next day after putting it on.

If you want to try something cheap, try a beaded seat cover or an airhawk first. If not either modify the seat or break down and buy an aftermarket seat.

I agree with everyone here replace the seat with an aftermarket one. When I first bought my nomad I had read the reviews in bagger mag. and they said that is the only thing they would do to make the bike better. I ordered a Mustang seat before I picked up my nomad and that was the first mod I did on the bike..It was really great to ride and not have pain after a few miles down the road; this makes the riding experence much more pleasurable.

Note, I have not had this done. But, will be over the winter. The thread on this convinced me. That thread is on this site.

Thanks guys. After I posted this, I saw the post concerninging spencers. I'll have to wait and see how much money I have to play with. The bike was great other then the seat. The harder I puched it the better it seems to run. After this round trip of 700 hundred miles and a shorter trip of 500 miles, no visible oil used and I'm averaging around 40 miles a gallon. Happy

Do you have highway pegs? I used to do 700-900 mile days pretty frequently on my 06 with the stock seat. But it took highway pegs, so I could shift my leg and hip position every now and then, to make it comfortable.

Best 'cheap' fix is a sheep hide. It can be fuzzy side up or leather side up, and totally cuts the heat from cookin' yer buns on black vinyl.

My stock seat was replaced after my first hundred miles with a Mustang seat w/backrest. Was sooo much better around town. But needed better on long rides. Trip to Maine and passed a place with sheepskin pads and wow the difference. One for pillion and she won't ride without it now. This combination for me and 500 mile days no problem.

Just had my seat done by Frank Turnier at: GreatDayToRide.com. The total cost with the upgraded gel foam was $100. However, the shipping charges both ways was $96. I would highly recommend this mod. I am very pleased with the results. I usually do several trips a year.
