Perfectly normal for oil to come out.

Your engine's gonna explode!

Good luck with the extenders. I have pics and a write up on my site, which is linked in my signatures.

Are you going to bury the bike?
Thats all you should require. Just be careful assembling it, its really not that difficult.

If you pull the left engine cover you may find traces of oil too. Some O rings might be handy if you go that way to insure the chain doesn't jump.

If you do it will add labor but insure the chain can't jump. And the O rings are for the spark plug well liners..... the one at right rear cly 2 and the other left ft cyl 1.

In the event you go this way, you will be turning the engine BY hand counter clockwise in rotation to seek a upside down 'F" mark for cly 1 (Ft cly) and again for a 'R' mark for the rear cly
.

LEAVE which ever tentioner IN under spring pressure untill you are ready for the next cly..

You can do cly 2 first if you want, and then leave the tensioner for cly 1 in and under pressure.

pressure couild also be a helper with a finger pressed hard into the tentioner when you are turning the engine.

Note the upside down letters are very hard to see looking up where the plug wells were.

Why would I have to pull the spark plug well liners? I don't understand what you mean by hard pressure with finger on tensioner as I turn the engine.

The can gears can be seen once the liners are removed. This is how you see the upside down F amd R marks to know the cams are in a safe place to let the chain go slack.

There is no other way to know if the chain is in a safe place or not.

If the chain is not in a safe place and you slack the chain off, the valve spring can over come the cam and the gear coggs and set valve timing OFF a 1 to 3 teeth on the cog and that won't make you happy.

The other way is a cheat and a wild guess and so far one has gone way wrong..

The finger pressure thing should not be needed really since there is a little cog in the teeth of the extender, but you would not want the chain to jump time, and it is possible if the cog isn't deep in the tooth on the rod, it could back up and let the chain go loose..

My problem is i can't see what stage you are at.... No one can know where the chain is at with out removing the plug wells.

There is no telling where any engine stops, but all engine tend to stop in certain places, but where is up to that one particular engine.

These chains are a lot looser than any other chains on any other vehicals I have seen. On no other engines I have worked on and that number has to be in the 10's of thousands have a chain you can pinch by hand and removed from the cam great coggs... On a 1600 Nomad engine that's cake... pulls right off easy.

Of course to know this the engine has to be on a bench and apart. The why that engine was, was the timing chain was allowed to go slack and the valve train closed and moved the gear coggs, slipping under the chain.

Is there any downside to putting a paper towel in plug hole to find top dead center?

A paper towel won't harm the engine, nor' would a longer screw driver, and both would show the piston at the top TDC Top dead center, but you could be on the compression stroke (good) or you could be on the exhaust stroke/intake stroke cross over. (No good)

I can't figure out how you could tell the difference.

The problem is IF valve springs turn the camshaft, and they can.....

This IS turning the engine by hand NOT with a start motor...
