steering head bearing race tool on the cheap

Going to give this a try since I'm doing my bearings right now I'll post a follow up but it sounds like it's worth a try

That sounds simple enough, I'll make one if I ever do the bearings again. I used a punch, it took a bit of work to knock out the race but it did come out.

That's actually a simple genius solution. Nice one skiman.

Thumbs Up

I saved that post as I also have a box of home made "specialty tools". They might not look great but they serve the purpose and were cheap to make! Thank's for posting it.

I almost bought one of those when I did my steering bearings, but went another route. But, here's a pic to help those that are more visual.....

Thanks for the idea. I haven't had to do the neck bearing yet, but I'm often knocking races out of trailer wheel bearing. I usually use a big brass drift, but I think I'll make a couple of different size ones of those and be ready for the next time.

The one you can buy is made from tool steel so for 30 bucks or so it's a good deal if works well the homemade might not hold up but that again you can buy a lot of tube for 30 bucks.

I used a drift punch with a flanged end. I took the flanged end to the grinder to do some mods. Worked great..out in no time.

Thanks Skiman! I need to do the bearings/races and did't want to go out and buy a $40 tool to use once or twice.

Well I made one and didn't have much luck with it mainly cause makaw made it a bear to get a tool on. So I took a tapered punch and took it to the grinder once I got one spot to go it was easy to get it out. The trick is to find the highest spot of the bearing and start there.

That will work too, I tried a few punches before I found one that worked for me.
