Turkeys can become quite the pests. I laughed about the one playing chicken with a car. Come on people, which weighs more - the car or the turkey??? ::) We had a wild tom that was kicked out of his group around the time of year that they mate. Took up residence in the parking lot area. After a time, he would actually chase people as they went inside. Simple fix, we ganged up on him, bagged him up and took him to the city park in town which had a fenced in area with different animals. Unbagged him and chucked his butt over the fence.

Remember the Thanksgiving day fiasco on "WKRP in Cincinnati. As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly." That was on of the funniest episodes. I laughed for days. |

Also, when back in Illinois the area was overrun with these worhtless birds. Again someone who was raising hybird turkeys just turned them loose. For those of you who do not know, you would never see a wild turkey. Their density is allot lower and they are allot smarter. I my case I just turned the dog loose and never had them in the yard again. Even after the dog was gone.

IDF&G started releasing turkeys into the wild here in Idaho a few years ago. In some areas they have really taken hold and now number into the thousands across the state. A few weeks ago I had to stop in the middle of a highway to wait for wild turkeys to get out of my way. I would have run through them but they are very large birds and much of the Bronco front end it plastic. After those birds cleared the road I found two more flocks in the next 1/2 mile. They were scratching around in a cut hay field. I bet there was close to 100 birds in that short section of road. i hear there are so many in the panhandle up north that landowners ask people to come and hunt them.

We have to watch for them here as well. I live where Stan used to live. They can be quite the pest at times.
Since they CAN FLY (despite some who believe they cannot) they can fly right into you and knock you off your bike. I have a friend that happened to once... and almost a second time when we were riding together. As far as eating them... they taste good. ;)

Greg is right. Wild turkeys are very powerful flyers. I have had them flush out from under my feet while is was sneaking around deer hunting, scared the crap out of me. Those birds gathered speed and weaved through the trees like frightened quail.
Had a farmer tell me that he watched a hawk swoop down and grab a turkey chick and head off with it. The hen turkey took off straight into the air and made a bee line for the hawk and attacked it causing the hawk to drop the chick! Extremely fast and powerful fliers. And good tasting to boot.
