Slow Speed Maneuvers
Just got a 2006 Vulcan Nomad and really like the bike. Used to have a Yamaha VSTAR 1100 Silverado and was able to do well with that in slow speed maneuvers. The Nomad does not seem to be as user friendly when it comes to slow speed maneuvers. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Actually I have found the Nomad to be very user friendly. The Ride Like a Pro V DVD is a good place to start. It is all in the rear brake, throttle, and friction zone of the clutch. A little parking lot practice will go a long way. Just don't get in a hurry, take your time. Several of the other guys will have plenty of suggestion, too.

I second the motion on Ride Like a Pro V. I picked it up a few months ago after attending their show at the Leesburg Bike Fest and watching a 90 pound girl handle a HD Electraglide effortlessly. It has really helped me improve my slow speed maneuvering.

It took me a while to get used to the Nomad after riding other bikes as well, The low speed handling takes a bit of getting used to but over time it becomes second nature. Don't push yourself beyond your comfort zone and within a few weeks youll be handling the bike with little effort.

Thanks for your words of encouragement. This is such an AWESOME bike that I am REALLY looking forward to getting a handle on these slow speed turns so that I can fully really enjoy all this bike has to offer. Took it out today for about an hour ride and on the highway at 70 MPH this bike just PURRS along. It so much different than what I experienced on my VSTAR 1100. This really is a GREAT bike........

Eagleman, Welcome to the group. Yup, you've hit on one of the quirks of the Nomad, at least for some of us. This may be too obvious, but stay off the front brake at the lowest speeds when doing anything other than going completely straight ahead. Haven't seen the Ride Like a Pro Video but sounds like I should have a look. |

Ells, You are so correct - I am struggling with the slow speed turns but am working through them and have ordered the Ride Like a Pro video so hopefully that will help. I really like how you mounted your passing lights - what kind are they and are they hard to mount? They really light up the front end of your bike well....

Welcome to the boards. You will get alot of good advice from the guys around here, most of them know what they are talking about.
I remember when I first bought my Nomad,it was heavy and awkward, but after some practice and just getting some experience with it,I have no problems with the slow speed manuevers. |

Eagleman, I agree that Ride like a pro is useful, though I didn't ever see it until well after I made this video.
When I did see it, I agreed with everything it said. Here is another video. I don't know how it is for you, but for me it is easier to get comfortable just know that the bike is capable of it. |

Dan the videos were GREAT - you really showed what this bike can do. Thanks alot for helping me to see what is possible with practice. That was a big help.

I bought the video last year and have loaned it to several of my friends. Even without actually practicing the maneuvers, the tips are great and I feel one hell of a lot more comfortable making U-turns in small(er) spaces. While I still have a lot to learn , its a great CD and worth the price.
Welcome Eagleman.....
