I've done 3 oil changes and haven't cleaned them, after I let the oil drain I usually take a 1/4 a qt of clean oil and pour it thru.

Kawasaki says cleaning the screens is not necessary, but this is what mine looked like at 8533 miles. I cleaned them and have rechecked them at higher mileages and never much dirt in there since. I feel better knowing they are clean but not likely that crap could ever go anywhere.

The 1700 has 2 oil pumps, and each pump has a screen to catch trash before grinding it up through the geroters. The screens sit crosswise in the sump and held by a large cap, one on each side of the engine. Picture below.
All Vulcan 800, 900, 1500, 1600 have the same screen, only one because they have one pump, and they were easy to access. The 1700 requires some disassembly to get to the plugs, left side behind the bottom coolant pipe and right side behind the frame section.

Here are pics of the plugs on an engine on my workbench, pretty difficult to see either one on the bike without removing the coolant pipe, and frame section.

Thanks. Never heard of these before. I wonder if these can be found on car/truck engines too?
