Question on J-M 2003 CB Unit install

Hi Guys,

I have a 2003 Nomad that I will be installing a JM CB system. I'm looking for suggestions on the best place to make the power&ground connections. Also best place to ground the antenna and cleanest way to route the coax cable.

Appreciate comments from anyone who has done this install. It sounds relatively straight forward......but I know from experience there always is a hitch somewhere along the line. ;))

I mounted the unit to the left side handlebar using the mount made for the 06 Nomad. There is a lot of excess cable so be prepared to deal with that. I have a fairing so it is hidden. I did cut the excess off the end of the power cord and used a connection to a power buss I have under the left side cover. You may need to go direct to a battery connection for that. I routed all my power connections to the front of the bike after I took the tank off. If you don't want to do that you can route your coax and power along the frame. I routed the coax that way along the right side and up under the rear seat. I got my coax, base loaded antenna and mounting hardware form Radio Shack. My antenna is mounted to my HD trunk but I also have a clamp fit standard mount that attaches to the right bag support when I want to go without the trunk.

You can use that base loaded whip or a Firestick but try to stick with a standard 3/8" x 24 antenna connector.

Sierra-MC.com is a great place for advice because you don't have to use everything J&M which is pricey.

Be sure to keep your power cord and antenna coax AWAY from the spark plug wires. You will hear the inductive pickup as a motor click in the headsets. I folded up the extra length of wires in between the forks behind the chrome plate under the headlight. It is all held in there with plastic wire ties.

I also used the J&M handlebar mount. Good for daytime riding but the angle is wrong for after dark because I can't see the screen. Need to bend the mount to improve the angle of the screen. I tried to move the handlebars up which improved the screen viewing at night but made steering uncomfortable. S'okay, I don't ride much at night anyway.
