Trunk Project

After several months of biding on Ebay I finally won a trunk to replace the cheap one i got. This one came off of a 83 Yamaha Voyage Royal with 35,000 miles. It has some scuffs, rust and some stress crack but i think i can restore it. The back rest pad is in perfect condition. No rips or cracks.
If anyone has any comments, suggestion or ideas on how i can tackle this project I would really be thankful.

Towering,

http://home.insightbb.com/~kpmh.010/N-TourPak.htm

Here is a link to a detailed description of a Tour Pak restoration project a guy did for his 2006 Nomad. It is pretty detailed with lots of photos. Good luck... :)!

Cheers...Kris

I have the same trunk. It isn't that difficult to do. It is all in the prep for the paint. Mine turned out ok and I had never done anything like this before. Just take your time and enjoy the process.

Word of caution though, don't take the metal band that goes around the edges off, just tape it when you paint. I heard from someone else that if you do that, it is bad news. No, I didn't do it. We took most of the other things off for paint though.

Looks like you got a pretty good one to work with. Take your time on the water sanding, and get it as close to perfect as you can, after the paint, every minor flaw will show up. I can't help with repairing cracks in plastic, you might could talk to a body repairman.

I got it all striped down and left the bands on. Did you seperate the top from the bottom ?

towering,
looks like you got a good start just finding a trunk in good shape. I did take the metal band off and regret doing that so much. I almost started looking for another trunk. If there is anything I don't like about my trunk project, is it's that the metal bands never went back on like they should have.My problem was that there was a crack or two that ran past and under the bands. So they needed to come off to fix them. I may do another one, one day. Good luck with yours.

I'm not sure but what is watersanding ?
Water Sanding--------- After you rough sand (dry) with 400 grit sand paper to get most of the imperfections out, you will need some 600 or 800 grit "wet/dry" sand paper (I found mine at Autozone, but most auto stores should have it, it'll be in body repair). What you do, is with a SMALL steady stream of water coming from a hose (little faster than a steady drip), let the water flow across where you are sanding, and lightly sand, you'll "feel" the sanding. It will be slick as glass when it dries. Do this before you primer. After the primer dries (a day or two is best), lightly water sand over it with the finest grit sand paper you can find (I used 1000 grit). Clean it with PLAIN windex, lightly go over it with a "tac" cloth (sorta like a sticky cheese cloth, auto repair section too) to get all the lent and dust off, then put the color to it.

Yep, separated the two parts from each other which made it a bit easier to handle and paint.

Jim's (Oldbikers) trunk was my first trunk, and my first try with refinishing. I got that trunk off ebay too. I think it looks better on the Nomad than my Harley trunk, but I couldn't figure out how to mount speakers on it, so I got the Harley trunk. I really like the Harley trunk, and my wife loves it.
I believe it's an '89 model off a Venture. Here's a pic of it when it was on my bike.....

My Mutazu trunk had a rattle between the lid and bottom half. Rather than attempting to adjust the latch, I picked up some weatherstripping at Lowes and added a thin strip over the existing seal. Worked like a charm for a little over $5. Give that a try CJ if yours is rattling.

Mine rattles a bit, but it's the rivet that secures the cable stay on the lid. I need to try and tighten it.
