Replacing steering head bearings

I ran across an old bike builder friend that said he would help me replace my steering head bearings. By helping me he knows that means me handing him tools and goffering drinks. But any way, he ask if I wanted to replace the race as well, he is an HD builder and does not know a lot about Kaws. We decided, might as well since it will be apart. But all that said to ask where to get the bearings and race (s) and what to get for an '01 carbed. I do not know how to tell if I have a G or L or what letter bike. Also any tips would be greatfully appreciated.
Thanks for your time

Replacing steering head bearings

If you go to ronayers.com and look at their microfiche it appears that an 01 carbed is a VN1500-G3. You should also be able to look up the steering head bearing numbers.
Its always better to replace the whole bearing assembly, the bearing and the outer race.
If it has never been done before there are o rings and maybe seals that you will probably need to replace as well. The microfiche will give you a good idea of what you will need. Getting the outer races out of the frame will probably be the hardest part of the job. There is not much to get a drift on to punch them out. Some people cut them in half with a dremel tool.

Replacing steering head bearings

Replace the bearings and races together as mentioned. There are some p/n listed in the Tech Board section for bearings and races.
