rebuilding engine

Does anyone know of a DVD that shows a 1600 being rebuilt, if so can it be bought

I'll gladly help answer any ???s that you have. I just finished my second one about 10 days ago.

Why do you want to rebuild it?

Could it just be freshened up without splitting the cases?

I doubt there is a video showing a rebuild, but if its just using a little oil why not just keep your eye on it and ride it.
These motors can go a long way without any major problems.

It is less expensive to buy oil occassionally than to rebuild the engine. Unless rebuilding the engine is just something you want to do.

I add about 3/4 quart at 2500 miles the bike has 24000 on now

I wouldn't touch it at that rate.

Keep riding it until it gets a lot worse.

Find a shop that can do a leak down test. This is a more accurate comp test basicly and the tools costs around 50 bucks. With the tool you need air.

The engine gets set to top dead center and the test is run on that cyl so the left side needs to be opened to turn the engine by hand and see the timing marks.Then the other cyl gets set up and is tested the same way.

The cheat is pulling a plug from each cly and raising the bike, and turning the engine with the rear wheel, feeling the piston with a dowel for TDC. Then testing one cly with a 50/50 chance of it having a open valve and if it does test the other cly.

With a valid leak down test you can tell if air is getting into the crank case, out a closed valve, only you can't tell which valve on the Nomad since there is 2 of each, or air into the cooling system showing a crack or a blown head gasket. If the leak down test checks out good then the only other choice is bad valve guides.

Mac that won't work with the KACR's in place.

One of the exhaust valves is partially open at any rpm below 300 even at o rpm's.

It will only close if it is spinning over 300 rpm's, it functions similar to an old mechanical advance on a distributor.

Are you using Syn oil or std. oil? I heard of people putting Syn oil in right at the start (new motor) and that doesn't allow the rings to seat in correctly. This will cause the rings over time to allow leak compression and thus use oil.

I wouldn't touch it either if thats all the oil its using, thats not really that bad to worry about yet. Does the bike have warranty? see what the dealer says about it.
Chuckster is correct, sometimes just switching to a different brand of oil can help.
