A spot of something?
Hello
Yesterday I noticed a spot of something under the Nomad more so on the right side. Further investigation lead me to a small black hose that comes from the Water Pump cover on the right side. I assume that this is like an Over Flow tube? I will also assume that the spot that was on the ground was coolant? My observation of the texture and smell was like oil? Now I know coolant can feel the same but the smell? Can someone clear up my concerns? Thanks again :)

That seems to discribe the water pump seal which also has a engine oil seal in back of the water pump seal. It is possible to have 3 things happen.
The inner water pump seal can leak and so coolant would be found. The outter engine seal behind the water pump seal can leak oil and so oil could be found. And or they both could leak at the same times, and you would find oil and coolant. A drop of one or both after parking isn't a real big deal, so long as it remains a drop. In cooler weather the shaft grows a little smaller, parked. There is no pressure on the coolant seal to push it into the shaft either cold. The oil side seal never has more than crank case pressure, and the larger sized shaft HOT. This is more or less just something to keep an eye on. If it becomes a problem there is a cheat to fix the engine oil seal with out splitting the case. The dealer probably has no idea about the cheat, and if you ask them they will tell you the entire engine case must be split.

clayton, if you are still under warranty (regular or extended) get the bike to a dealer and get the leak documented!!! Do it a couple times and complain specifically that it is oil and antifreeze mixed that comes out. The coolant side seal can be replaced with out removing the engine from the frame. It is a $400 parts and labor repair at a Kaw dealer if you are paying the ticket. If on the other hand it is the oil seal or a deffective shaft (which Kaw will not admit to but there are some defective water pump shafts in circulation on the 1600s) it does require removal of the engine from the frame and spliting the cases. You can plan on a near $2,000 bill by the time they are done if you take it back to maw Kaw. I speak from experience!

Put a sheet of clean white paper under the spot where it leaked, you may have a better shot at determining what it is.

Well yesterday I crawled under the bike and placed my finger on the end of the tube.
The color is green'ish. So it is coolant. I am keeping an eye on it and it seems that no other drops have hit the pavement or on the floor in the shed. Unfortunately it is no longer covered by Maw Kaw Mac...what is the cheat? :)

Hupefully it was just an isolated drip and you won't see it anymore.
I know about the cheat that Mac mentions. It is buried here on this forum somewhere way back a couple of years. Hopefully someone has saved it for easier reference, our search feature here isn't the best, unless you really know how to get around it.

There is a cheat to install the engine side oil seal backwards thru the shaft space, but that won't work if the shaft is also defective. All you can do is install the seal, and Clayton that isn't a job you can do. It is a techs trick.
A tech can check the shaft and it is is the shaft too, then a new seal might buy time only and other wise the engine would need to be torn down as mentioned on a thread else where here and shown on another site. I don't recall the title, but it is a recent thread. I know if it were me I would try another cheat and see if i could sleeve a defective water pump drive shaft before I split the case. Then install that seal backwards, but I don't know if that is possible, it just might be. I sure don't have that kinda dough to pay to Ma Kawii. On edit: Just tripped over the other thread and the link to the pics on this. http://www.chopcult.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2703

My 05 had a few drips of coolant from the weep tube at the start of the season but nothing since.
