Hawaii

The wife and I are heading to Hawaii in a few months. Trying to get the trip planned so we don't waste any time. I will have 7 days on the Islands to see it all. So, for those that have been there and done that, what must I see. We know that we will Island jumping which is ok. The only thing I know for sure is that I have to see Pearl Harbor since I am a WWII nut and then I have heard a lot about the Polynesian Culture Center and the
Dole Pineapple Plant. Alaska trip two years ago, Switzerland last year and I am trying to top the fun each year. We also hear that "snoobing" is a lot of fun as is the helicopter ride over the waterfalls and volcanos. Shoot your best shot at helping us spend our kids inheritance.

Don't really know what to tell you about Hawaii but I hope you guys have lots of fun. I know the Army has a post there. The 25th Infantry was assigned there, not sure if they are still there.

I was last in Hawaii in 58 and it wasn't my cup of tea.

I stopped there as part of a 7mo. cruise on an Aircraft Carrier courtesy of USN.

I would think you'll have a hard time topping Switzerland. ;)

But I'd be thinking more like Brazil!

Anyway have a wonderful time, stay sober, eat pineapple and beware of the corral at Waikiki!

7 days will be full and you already have a lot filled up. If you can, I would recommend you add a few days to that if you are going to island hop.

On Oahu: Pearl will take you at least half a day....drive to Dole from there and then drive the north shore the other half of that day....lots of little villages to go thru and check out, plus you can stop at the famous bonzai pipeline where they surf. Make sure to stop for lunch at one of the "shrimp trucks". Also on that northern side of the island is the culture center....I personally am not the biggest fan of the Polynesian Culture Center..its OK..its just all fake and made up for display by the students of the Brigham Young. The Luau there is not something you expect from there adds...its kinda cafeteria style....try to do a luau on the beach..several hotels do it and there are a couple companies that do one too. Walk down Waikiki Beach at night and eat on the beachfront (Dukes is good). Just be prepared that Honolulu is just a great big ole city that happens to sit on the Pacific Ocean.

Big Island:
Volcano national park on the big island is a big part of a day too on the big island. The landscape and scenery on the rest of that island is great to spend a day riding around. I tend to get off any main roads and go explore.....black sand beaches are cool to see...lots of sea turtles.

Maui: Just too commercial for me now but still beautiful. Road to Hana is a must see. Nice waterfalls.

Kauai: The most beautiful and less touched of the islands...has the grand canyon of the Pacific....you have got to take a helicopter ride around Kauai if you can...thousands of waterfalls....If I had to pick one island to go to, I think it would be Kauai for a relaxing Vacation. You mention "snuba"...that's fun....but I recommend finding one of the dive shops that will take you on a "discovery dive" ... you go with a PADI instructor and they actually take you on a guided dive to see if it is something you want to get into..if you do..later you can count that dive toward your certification....find one that will take you out to the Sheraton Caverns about a half mile offshore...its a great dive...thousands of sea turtles and lots of other fish and scenery. (Edit..here is the dive shop we used www.seasportdivers.com)
OK..that's my schpiel....you will enjoy it all except the flight back home. Oh you can rent a Harley on the islands and ride around if you want

I hope the Tsunami warning that is now in effect for Hawaii doesn't ruin your plans.

Maybe it won't be as bad as the warning they are issuing this morning. (Issued just this morning.)

Best of luck to you.

A trip to the top of Diamond Head is awesome. The view from the old bunkers has to be one of the best.

Hey Dennis, Rider magazine had a nice article on riding in Hawaii. It was the favorite ride section I think.
