99% sure it's time to say goodbye
Then I hate to say it but I'm pretty sure the Nomad is going away. I just found out that I need to have surgery on my shoulder in about 2 weeks, which will leave me in a sling for 4 weeks immobilized. I learned that the PT is followed by about 4 weeks of physical therapy and then 6 months of light activity only. This includes no motorcycles. Bicycles are fine, but no motorcycles, so that means the earliest I could be on the bike is January 2010. I really struggle with leaving the bike unridden for nearly 18 months (This winter plus rehab plus next winter). I guess sometimes things just aren't meant to be. I guess I know where there's a pretty black Nomad all bling'd out that will be looking for a new home.

Why can't you mothball it for a year? Once you're back to be abe to ride again, you're gonna regret letting it go!

I thought about it, but it's hard. storage becomes a issue, the wife has a bike that she won't touch unless I'm with her, that makes 2 bikes in storage. Neither are paid for and I'm guessing long-term storage isn't that great on them.
I don't know. I wasn't expecting the 8month recovery on a 1 hour surgery I guess. |

Please don't take this as me making light of your situation, it's not meant to; it's just a way to help logic through this.
If the bike has been "worth it" to you so far...you will miss it and buy another one likely. If you do that you will lose a lot of money probably on the sale of this one, and the purchase of the next one. If it sits unused for a year, you will lose a little depreciation without getting value (riding enjoyment) but you won't have to try to sell a bike and go through that buying process again. If on the other hand it didn't get thoroughly in your blood...perhaps you'll sell it and in a year get the bike itch and start looking around and get a completely different style of bike. In that case, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. If you are worried about the bike not being ridden, Southwest air has specials for $39 to many cities, if your is one of them I'll fly up a couple of times and ride your bike for you. As a favor to you of course! |

Sorry to hear about the surgery and the long recovery. I hope you will eventually be back in the saddle. Personally, I think I'd ride anyway - maybe after a few months. But then nobody ever accused me of being smart.

I would think that in 3 months time (I've had a few shoulders sx's as well) you'd be well enough to take some small jaunts just because you can. Thinking on a larger scale, if your going through rehab (been there and they really push you shoulder through a lot) that riding with the mild pushing and pulling and flexing the small muscles that maintain your balance would be therapeutic?!!
It's nice to know we can always count on Dan!!! ![]()

Like Dan and BD said, I'd not give it up. I'd kep it to prevent the hit one takes in selling for a loss. Just start her up about once a week and let it run for about 10 or so minutes to keep all the engine parts lubed and in working order.

I have known a couple of people that went through the shoulder surgeries. I don't think I would get in a hurry to sell right away. After all, this is a cruiser not a sport bike. It might be easier to take a quiet ride than you would think after things start to heal. Maybe not a long ride, something short to see some pretty country. therapeutic. Most of the people I have met that say you can't be riding have never ridden. They all assume we are forcing the bike around rather than let the bike take us where we want to go. Hope your surgery goes well.

They told me wit the Spinal stenosis and the therapy I was going thru that I wouldn't be riding a bike. Sell it. Well it was the only place I got comfort. I took a whole week off and I was right on it. Not saying this is your case but Doctors are not always right. They tend to err on safe. Been riding a full year with no issues now.
Just my opinion. |

Sorry to hear about your medical issues. I would wait at least until your physical therapy is over to make a decision. But of course finances are different for everybody. Good luck whatever you decide.

Not to be rude tdk; but everyone has said what needs to be said about you NOT selling the bike; and I agree.
BUT; if you are committed to selling it -- what do you want for the bike? I might be interested. You can PM me on the price if you want. You're not that far from me geographically.

I wish you the best on your surgery. Hang in there for awhile before selling if your finances and storage allow.

Not trying to get you to change your mind that is a decision you have to make for your self but I can tell you this: In the last 2 years I have had 2 operations on my neck and they are trying to get me to have another one, Then I had open heart surgery and now they are trying to get me to have an operation on my lower back, But I still have my bike!

tkd, I recall your excitement here when you were picking it up. We all know that feeling and hate to see you have to give it up. But none of use can really evaluate your personal situation. I'm sure you will do what is best for you and your family. Sometimes we just need to make and live with tough and undesirable decisions. If you get a fair price and shop around the next time you get bit, you probably won't lose too much financially.

![]() I feel for you, but like others have said here....don't be too quick to do something you may later regret. That said...you have to make the ultimate decision regarding the fate of your bike ownership. Best of luck with whatever decision you arrive at.
