National Cycle fender tip
So wifey bought me a Show Chrome side covers and the National Cycle fender tip for Christmas. Got the side covers installed in just minutes. The fender tip however was a different story. First of all having to drill the 3 holes in the fender didn't excite me much. Then the screws that came with the tip weren't long enough due to the hemmed edge of the fender. So off to the hardware store to buy some longer stainless steel screws. I bought both the 1/2" and 3/4" to be on the safe side. The 1/2" inch did the trick. She bought the tip to cover up a few rock chips in the paint, unfortunately I the fender got scratched in a visible spot trying to get it installed. Good thing I have a buddy that owns a body shop and mixed me up some touch up paint. I like the way it looks once its installed (even thought it is about a 1/4" off center), but I won't install another one if I ever get a different Nomad. I was thinking about installing the rails on the saddle bags but now I'm a little leery. Those of you that installed them let me know how it went. :-/

I put the fire & steel bag rails on my 06 nomad. There's a couple of threads on that subject.

The rails are simple to install, use masking tape to mark the holes and prevent scratches. Measure carefully and drill, then install.

Like ring said, tape it off first. You wont scratch anything that way.

I had the bike on the stand so it was level. Used blue painter tape so I could mark locations. Measured, took pictures for the better part of 2 hours before I worked up the nerve to drill. They went on with no problems though.

I also did the top rails last spring. I followed the instructions on Gadget's site and didn't have any problem. One thing that helped me was bolting the bags togther side-by side, then using the blue painter's tape - lots of blue painters tape! measure it, then re-measure it, then re-measure it again. Take as much time as you need before you start drilling.

It was nerve racking for me also but gott'er done.
Like it say's on Gadgets site don't drill all three holes at once or they 'll be off a bit. I think it's the back two first, tighten up the screws then mark the front location.... you might wanna look that up. And make sure they are laid out properly, I seen a Nomad with them mounted backwards... it just looks wrong.

National Cycle fender tip
Just did mine last week.
I had to drill the center hole first and snug it up to determine where the two side holes should go. Taking the fender off also made it a lot easier and also allowed me to put some undercoating on. I just wish I had double checked the alignment from underneath before drilling the two side holes. I think I'm off about an 1/8th of an inch. Can't really tell when the bike is leaning on the kick stand. |
