Help cold idle
It has been so long since I have been on I had to create a new account... Anyway My bikes cold idle is "kicking up and down" from fast to slow. It runs fine just until it warms up it goes up and down prior to getting warm. This started happening after taking it in for service and the mechanic admitted to adjusting the idle....
I have a 2004 1500FI any suggestions? Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Help cold idle
Id start by cleaning the throttle bodies with a toothbrush, adding some Seafoam to a tank of fuel, and checking for a vacum leak. All this is here on recents posts to explain the procedures. More than likely this will cure the problem.

Help cold idle
OK here is the whole story if you care to hear it. When I bought the bike I bought a "pit pass" that covered all maintence for 3 years. The last visit (end of my 3 years) the day after I picked it up the idle wasn't right after being back in a few times, I get a call from the dealership. You need a new ECU.....are you fn,,,,,kidding me, I am comming to get the bike. I look at the throttle bodies and they are very dirty. After cleaning them i fire it up and the bike is idling so high it sounds like the engine is going to explode. Apparently each time I brought it in they cranked up the idle a little to compensate. After adjusting it back down the bike is running perfectly with no idle problems......thank you very much!!!!

That's great news. It's amazing what the professionals can't do, but the knowledge you get from this forum is just unbelievable.
But, then again, you have 100's of experiences verses the few mechanics. |

I wonder if "professionals" is the correct term to describe some of the "mechanics" at certain dealerships. I'm sure that there are professional mechanics at some dealerships and that is a good thing.
However, I will do all my own maintanance. Partly because I can't afford to pay those guys and mostly because it's fun. ![]()

I wonder what the dealer would do if they installed a new ECU and the bike still ran like crap. theyd probably sell you a new throttle body...
Glad to hear it all well with a simple bit of maintenance.
