Vulcan 2000
A buddy of mine sold his HD and is now looking at an 04 2000. The bike has 4000 miles is flawless, one owner add on saddlebags and an after market seat. other than that I believe its stock. The guy is asking $8500 for the bike. I don't know if it has an extended warranty or not. Is that a fair price for the bike or is he out to lunch. I'm thinking that a couple of members own one of these. What type of fuel mileage do these get is one of his questions and how reliable is the motor. He likes the bike but neither him nor I have any knowledge of the model. I told him I would consult the experts to see what I could find out. Thanks ahead of time for any help.

My friend just traded his in for a HD street glide. He had V&H pipes and an air kit installed and he had some problems at times with it running right. It acted up a few times, not starting and running like crap and stuff and he had it in and out of the shop a few times within the year or two he had it. He said it had tons more oomph than the harley though.

It's an early model & it will need a few updates that, while not difficult to do, will cost several hundred dollars if not already done. If it has had the front pulley and rear hub replaced, it's probably a fair price. My buddy got a brand new one with windshield and Leather-lykes for $10,000, but then had to do the upgrades eventually. It's been a real solid bike for him since.
Some folks are reporting early piston wear, but then some folks also ride the crap out of them too. |

I think he can work that price down a little. Aftermarket "add ons" add Jack Squat to the price of a used bike usually. Dealers all over have V2K's a couple of years old sitting in the dealerships around here. As Cadd pointed out 10K for a brand new one is not impossible.

I thank
the bigger the Kaw the more they drank. And that price sucks, I'd shop a little more. I suggest shopping at the dealers(s) if for nothing else but to see the expression on the dealers face while they're trying to shaft you with end less lines of BS. That experience will benefit your friend for the rest of his life and he might just find a deal on a Kaw.

What is the problem with the front pulley and rear hub. I realise that the asking price is high but there has been no negotiations even started yet.

I think BD is right, particularly in SoCal or Sacto, the prices will be better. Dealers there have leftovers on the floor. That's not true here in Fresno, and in Pennsylvania it may or may not be true.

BTW, the local custom bike shop here just sold a very nice (but stone stock) low mile VN2k for $10k.

I was in the dealership a few months back and you could buy a new V2K for less than a new Nomad.
I hope Kaw wises up and makes a real touring V2K with hard bags, trunk, etc. Like a Venture only better, cuz it's a Vulcan.

Bikes around here at least seem to bring a premium. New or used. I know when I shop I'm very impatient, if its new i go to all the dealers in 50+ mile radius tell them I want there best out the door price if their price is the lowest I will be back, if not I will buy from someone else. I tell them my time is just a valuable as theirs and I dont have time to call them back and say this guy beat you by $200 what can you do. Maybe not the best approach but at least they know were I'm comming from. When it comes to used I like to buy for trade in value but lately that became realy hard to do,especially when looking for any thing thats easy on gas. Big gas guzzlers that another story its a buyers market if you offer even close to what they have in it there glad to move it on. I have friends who own car lots Ive seen them take a loss just to free up money they get tired of setting on it.
