Anyone going to Surgis this year?

I know you guys had the National Rally in Sturgis last, but was wondering if anyone was planning on going this year. A friend an myself are going. We are planning a 9 - 10 day trip. Probably 4500 - 5000 miles round trip. We were planning on maybe spending one day in Sturgis. We're from North Carolina, so the plan is after leaving S.D. come down toward Denver and head back east. Will be logging some miles each day, but looking forward to it.

Anyone have any suggestions, or watch-outs?

Thanks

yeah all camping and lodging costs about 300% more during the rally. You are obviously willing to put on some miles so I would avoid trying to stay close to Sturgis. You should really try to ride through Spearfish Canyon, Custer State Park, and Needles Highway. I personally LOVE the Deadwood area and the southern Hills around Custer.

If you like leather try to stop at Trevino's Leather located just south of Deadwood at the bottom of Strawberry Hill. That guy is amazing. Obvious touristy stuff, Rushmore, Crazy Horse.
Hill City has a great winery.
Watch outs -- DEER! They are not skittish out there. Other than that have a great trip. Oh and check out http://www.travelsd.com/

Watch out for buffalo, too. It's really something to come around a corner and see 2,000 pounds on four hooves staring you in the face.

+1. Watch out for the deer also, especially later in the afternoon just before dark. I would definitely limit my night riding to inside towns. The hilly and twisty roads are teeming with wildlife after dark.

Oh no, limiting the nite riding isn't the key. Limiting the speed while night riding is important. Oh yeah, TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES.

I would go back again to ride the Black Hills in a heartbeat, if I had the chance. I really liked it there.

+1. I wouldn't mind the National Rally being there again. I loved it up there. I was actually checking out real estate prices after returning home. Nice place to retire if you don't mind the cold and snow.

If you have never been to the rally... check out this site.

http://www.sturgis.com/

As OP said; everything is priced up 300%.

If you haven't made your reservations for a hotel; or campground -- you had better get on it now or else you'll be staying 100 miles away -- maybe at OP's!! Ha!

Have fun... I won't go there during the rally. There are just way too many bikes there for me to enjoy myself.

But I have plenty of friends that go and love it. So I wait to hear their stories and look at the pics when they return.

Again... have fun!

Sounds like a great trip. A very long ride but it should be well worth it. Some beautiful country to see along the way. Good luck and be safe.
