If I was going to buy a new Harley....

They have an interesting deal going right now. If you buy a sportster, then next year buy a big twin...they will give you the same amount of trade in as your purchase price was on the sportster.

I think I'd ride a sportster around for a year just to experience another style of bike (don't think I'd be doing many long trips) and then trade it in after riding it for free.

But, I won't be doing it at all really.

And what kind of deal do you get on the bike you're buying the following year? I'm always leary of any deal that sounds too good to be true and I don't see this as any different.

I read about this offer online somewhere else, and I had the same question that Caddman brought up. I would be cautious about that deal, too.

I stopped in the local Harley shop recently (I was only buying an air pump for my shocks, O.K. ). I saw that offer posted. I guess that they're using that as a way to draw more into the harley fold. Pretty smart really. Get someone on a sportster and a year later they have a choice, full trade in on another Harley or take the hit on depreciation if they change brands.

If I was going to buy a new Harley....

they had a deal a few years ago where if you bought a buell you
could trade after i year and recieve what you paid for it in trade
on a big twin harley.a friend of mine did this and had to threatin
a law suit to get the dealer to honor it.not all dealers are in the program and the bikes condition must be like new with very low
mileage.condition is determined by the dealer and the fine print
allows them to not honor the deal if they don't like the bikes condition.at least this is how the story was told to me.this friend
called me from the dealer and said that they were also trying to
charge him $850. for a pair of throw over leather saddle bags that
they had on the bike.

I think it is a good deal. Harley can get away with this because of the demand for the smaller displacement engines right now. Dealers can't hold on to anything in the 1300 or less category. They will not take much of a hit. Harley rarely offered much of a deal anyhow on their bikes, so I don't think it will affect your "deal" with them much at all.

I figure the sportster buyer would be so embarrassed by being laughed at by the rest of the "family" they just bought into, that they would have no choice but to "trade up" or go home.

Catch is you will pay/trade for full MSRP for the big one, for course HD has probably been getting away with that anyway, but not so likely in hard times ahead. Then of course you are stuck with the big HD :(

Yeah, but you'd probably be helping them out with their bailout plan and you think they're expensive now?

It would be cheaper to rent one to try it out. and then when you come to your senses you could go back to your nomad.

Ahhh reminds me of the time I was thinking bout buying a Harley....

Let me tell ya, after I rode an electra-glide standard it sure felt good to ride out of that HD dealer on my old Nomad....
So good in fact that I traded her in on a NEW NOMAD....
