Clutch rod seal

I have a friend that had the seal go inside and when he pulled the rod out it fell down inside. QUESTION: I advised him it probably fell all the way to the bottom.
Can you fish it out at the side drain plug where the screen is?
If he just puts in a new seal and drives will it just lay in the bottom?

I found a spring off of one of the cam de- compressors, in there. That washer is about the same size as the opening of the screen though. So if the engine was run, and it got stuck there, it would partially block the screen, and seriously affect the oil flow. You might never know if it had either, as the oil light probably would'nt come on to warn you.
That seal position is a really bad design. The casing should have had a shoulder on it, to prevent it being pushed in.

Mine fell in on my 2007 1500. I thought it was over for me, Ran in the house and bought the extended protection plan. Nothing ever happened, 9 years later still ran fine.

Not to say this is not important, I think and still feel like I just got lucky.
So it is possible it may not affect the bike.

On my '05 Nomad the same thing happened to me and I never retrieved it but it ran fine with no problems going forward.

If that seal keeps you up at night floating around in your gearbox, which it has plenty of room to get out of dangers way on the bottom of the crank/transcase floor.
But if your loosing sleep, go to amazon, get a $40 borescope attach for your phone, go thru your hole from hell right behind your clutch basket.
Use your magnet on the end of the camera, snag the seal and drag it out....
https://www.amazon.com/Seesi-Endosco...%2C513&sr=8-13
This is what I use.....and I use it alot....

I also use this camera to look at timing chains, inside of cylinders and to look into suspected trans damage thru that hole from hell....takes a little camera adjusting and some practice to get it to go where you want it....plug it either into my smartphone or laptop....
laptop is actually better because of the larger screen and better picture quality....

Sound advice DL. It would bother the shit out of me, if it was just left to chance. But a magnet aint going grab a rubber seal. You need the kind of scope that has a claw on the end. I imagine they come more expensive.

I think there’s enough metal for the magnet to work.

I poked the seal on my 1600 Meanstreak into the hole. It dropped down to the bottom of the bevel gear case. We tried to fish it out, but elected to pull the bevel gear case (a lot of other stuff had to come off first.) There it was! Took all day, but I slept well that night. If I recall, the seal has a small spring in it, so a magnet might work if the spring sticks to a magnet. Not a job for the timid, but if you have the tools and a little mechanical ability, it's not that bad.

If you had left it lay where it landed would it have been okay.

The best thing to use a really large 1/4 drive socket so you can't drive it in too far, or use a bearing and seal driver tool like from Harbor Freight....
Me myself, I use a 3/4 special ordered socket for a 1/4" drive from the HD's service days....works perfect....
They should've put a step on bottom of hole, or put a lip on the seal....

I would have been a nervous wreck.

From my years working as a CAT mechanic i have seen where gear teeth would get broke off and later there would be a catastrophic failure because cold oil would move things around, and as heavy as they were, they still would get drawn up into the gear train.

Some small things would go through the gears like in this case and probably not be noticed.

But Murphy.s law scares me.

Case in point.

A mechanic I worked with bought a new scoot from a dealer south of me. But he live a bout an hour from the shop.

Taking his new scoot home, he was on the freeway when the rear wheel locked up. No warning, just stopped turning. Speed limit in those days was 55 mph. George was an older and conservative rider

Long skid mark, didn't drop it and didn't get hurt.

He called the dealer and they came with a trailer and brought the new scoot back to the shop.

Upon inspection they found no oil had been added to the shaft drive differential.

So the dealer made good on the problem.

Next weekend George is cruising down the road and the same thing happens. This time he ends up off the road out in the tall grass, almost in the same location as the original problem.

Calls back for a trailer. Now the dealer is thinking what the devil is going on, because they gave this scoot a going over before it was released to George.

Well it took some time but what they pieced together was when the differential locked up, a transmission tooth was chipped and fell in the bottom of the transmission case. In a short time it was picked up by the oil movement going into the gear train, jamming the transmission and stopped the rotation of all the engine / transmission components.

George was a pretty cool customer, and the dealer provided a new skoot for him.

I kinda think if it's not supposed to be there, and I dropped it in there, then it's coming out or I don't sleep well. And I'v done my share of dropping.

I cant remember how many engine and transmission failures I'v seen where a foreign object was left to chance, and when the problem was walked away from, it reached out and bit the offenders in the backside.

I have an 03 1500, little over 50k miles. It is leaking where the clutch push rod goes thru the case. It goes thru a “bushing/seal” Dealer can not find the part in the book, and my book does Not show this. Are you talking about the same part, and if so, how do I find/order one or reseal. I have pulled all the parts to, but have not tried to pull it out, as if it goes in... well that has been discussed. Your thoughts are appreciated, and I apologize for hijacking thread, if I did.

On partzilla it’s pictured on the transfer case where it shows the clutch slave hole
92049. Pull the rod out and use a spring hook to pull the seal out. Put the new one in with silicone rubber. Use a washer bigger than the seal and don’t push it all the way in. Leave it out about 2 or 3 mm so the rubber will harden and form a lip.
