Question Thoughts

06 Nomad, big three done 68k miles all by me. Have had bike for 12 years so I know the noise it makes when it has been sitting for a while. Cam chain extensors done years ago. Several weeks ago the tapping would not go away even after many miles of riding. Used some Seafoam to clean it as I was due for an oil change. Still made the same noise beginning at about 1500 rpm. I can still hear it with my ear buds in a 3/4 helmet at cruising speed. I bounced it off of the rev limiter several times in first and second and added Seafoam to the gas tank, cleaned throttle bodies/butter flies and air filter rode until time to change the oil. Still hearing noise otherwise she rides like always. I had flushed and filled radiator over the winter and put in new iridium plugs. As luck would have it I could not get the cap that holds the oil screen off, rounded head off trying. Ordered a replacement and in the mean time rode just enough to keep the oil pumped up and bought some sockets that would grip the rounded off head. New part came in and no such luck on the sockets. Took parts to the stealer along with Mobil One 10w-40 I have used since Ive had the bike and waited to get the call to come pick up. Mechanic calls a few days later stating that the oil is for an auto and while it would work that a motorcycle oil is needed due to having a wet clutch. Just picked it up after letting them put in Kawasaki synthetic oil and the tapping is still there though it seems different. I will continue to ride and see if it quiets down but it seems to still be running fine. Last fill up I went to a higher octane to see if that made any difference but if it did I couldn’t tell. Any constructive thoughts appreciated.

I had an issue just like this on my 1700 after it was rebuilt. The dealer said it was a pressure relief valve in the lower end of the motor. Left side while sitting on it. they cleaned it and it went away. I do not know how to access it though. I did look up the part on the parts pictures on line.

Been using Mobil 1 High-Mileage Synthetic 10w40 "car oil" in all my bikes since 2004. Some people just don't know how to read an API service label.

And what are we looking for again. Was it "M" or was it "J" If I remember correctly not S/N. Is that right?? And those are ?? friction modifiers?? Added.

Back to the subject at hand,,,,, did they get the oil screen out? If so did it have any metal shavings in it?

Yes screen cleaned and put back in. Told them to look for any shavings in old oil but mechanics said it looked good. It’s the front cylinder if that means anything.

The tapping is probably a lifter or 'lash adjuster'....they sometimes loose their ability to pump up....its a seldom seen thing, but it does happen. I'm just speculating here....but it also could be piston slap, could be your compression release mechanism.
Is your timing chain slapping?
Have your mechanic use his mechanics stethoscope to listen and Identify that noise.
Your cam on the front cylinder could've worn just slightly beyond the lash adjusters range of adjustment....
The 1500's are very noisey engines, even on its best day it rattles, clanks, whirs. As long as its not knocking, shaking violently, and making some really strange noise, and its running fine....your OK. When it gets quiet....thats when you gotta worry....
If its tapping, it is probably in the head. A experienced mechanic with a listening device, even a piece of broomstick, which I use on occassion, can be a good diagnostic tool....

What she said. As always.
Mine was the compression release, after the tear down and reassembly. Also front cylinder. But a 1700 motor so??? not sure it would apply. I must say my 1500 classic was a real rattle trap but ran and ran and ran.

He said 06 Nomad, just figured a 1500/1600....they are essentially the same motor, the 1600 is just a stroked 1500. The 1700s are a new beast, while they do share some likenesses in general, its completely redesigned....
On the automotive oils in your bike....as long as theres no zddp, friction modifiers involved, theres no problems. Look on your oil bottles and make sure your oil is compatable. though it doesn't say it, theres a code by the national oil symbol on the bottle that says its compatable. Pisses me off when the stealership wrenches says you gotta run motorcycle oils. You do not, as long as your oil is rated for a wet clutch bike.

We've gone thru the oil threads here....we've thrashed and hashed it out on many occassions....and folks get quite bent outta shape on some of this stuff....
Do a search and see all those oil threads....you'll see what I mean.
Hell, I run diesel oil in my bikes and my old harleys....but I do use Lucas oil additives and in my really hi-performance builds, I run Lucas oils. But my everyday rides, I run the diesel oil. Helps eliminate dry stars, which is where 95% of the wear and tear is....

Mine had a similar hard tapping noise from top end last year. Thought it was a lifter and didn’t have any top oil handy so i added a cup of deisel in the oil and took it for a ride. Quiet in 20 minutes, changed the oil and it never came back.
Cleaned some sludge out of the lifter maybe. 100 k and strong.

Any particular diesel oil? On my old BMW I used to put Rotella in it, but over time that oil changed too. My 1600 is due for an oil change so it would be a good time to change to an oil that may help reduce some of the noise. Though, on my 1600 I don't hear anything to cause me more than curiosity. Since my 1600 is near 32,000 miles the tensioner extensions are probably due.
