Regular or Premium Gas

I have a 2005 1600 Nomad and am wondering what grade of fuel does everybody use?
I just purchased the bike and have done a lot of maintenance on the bike and have read the owners manual and was wondering if anyone has read the manual and interpreting the grade of fuel to use.

on my 08 Nomad I had to use Premium, the highest octane I could get or the bike would ping like crazy.

Same as recumbentbob, I had an ‘05 1600 Nomad and had to use premium or it would ping going up hill.

I have a fuel programmer on my 2006. In the winter I often just use regular gas and it rarely pings unless I idle in traffic congestion. In the spring and summer I go with premium.

I would use premium year around but I fear the premium fuel may be older and tainted. Years ago, I had a 1993 Cadillac that required premium. I was routinely getting bad premium fuel. It has me spooked about premium.

After I put a Dobeck unit on my 2005 Nomad it rarely pinged.
I ran 87 octane all the time.

If your trying to allieve the pinging issue, install a programmer and install some ngk iridium plugs.
Will start faster, run better, gain a couple of mpgs....

I run regular. No issues.
I figure that the damn hose at the pump is already full of regular from the car/truck that just fueled up in front of me, so by the time the premium fuel starts coming out I've already filled my tank half way with the regular stuff anyway. Unless it's a dedicated premium only pump which is rare in my neck of the woods.

Does anyone know the Iridium code for a '03 Nomad 1500? NGK Site search says DPR6EA-9, but I think that's just the standard ones? Amazon only shows up standard with that code

The reason I ask the question is because in my neck of the woods regular is85 octane, premium fuel is 92 octane and no alcohol mid grade is 88. All my other bikes I have had since the mid 90's would run best on premium and the owners manual says I need to run at least 90 octane.
So I think I will go with the majority and run premium.

I just checked Amazon and it says the NGK iridium spark plug NGK DPR7EIX-9 will not fit a 2005 1600. Is there another spark plug that will help the bike run a little better and start easier?

Amazon don't know any in depth tech shit....check your part #s on the bike sites if your not sure if we're not on the site....the 1500/1600 interchangeability is quite extensive....
