Pump seal repair: save $2000-WARNING big photos!

Well, maybe not $2000, but at least $1000 I'll bet. Last I heard it costs $1500 for the dealer to replace the inner water pump seal on a nomad, and that was some years ago.

Mark D. sent me these instructions for replacing the inner waterpump seal without overhauling the whole engine. He didn't create these and cannot recall who did, but I've examined them and it clearly looks like it'll work fine to me.

WARNING: This is a painstaking procedure requiring careful grinding in tight quarters. If you nick the shaft in the process you'll be tearing the whole engine down for sure. The draining of coolant and removal of pump cover and impeller isn't shown. If you can't get that far without instructions, quit reading this right now. You aren't qualified to do it.

I accidently posted step #15 twice. That's been corrected.

No, and you'd better have steady hands too. The originator mentioned that somebody'd butchered this job before he tackled it. You can see the gouges on the engine case where some ham-handed fool pried on the original outer seal.

I pretty much stopped at the pre work warning. talking about all the fluids. I dont want to deal with that. That's why I got the 6 year warranty. I just gotta hope it last till then then its time to get a 2013 model

I would like to make some minor suggestions to the procedure. Once you remove the ball bearings, and if the inner race does slide off, rather than dremel the outer race, I would use a three jaw / inside puller on a slide hammer to remove the outer race. Plus, really, really inspect the shaft area where the inner seal rides. If it's grooved from the old seal, then a new seal will only last so long ( not that long ). There is a product called a " speedy sleeve " that is made to go over damaged shafts so the new seal has a clean surface to ride on again. It would take some time to source the correct size but it would be worth it.

Keep us posted

Good suggestions Voyager; Hopefully its a job you will never have to want to do, but I would attempt myself rather than take it to a dealer.

Sure beats the other way. I wonder what year engine this is? There is considerable corrosion in the bolt holes too. Indicates older engine.. Pre 99' I'ld guess.

Adding tooling means you probably have it. I would use a puller too, but then I have several.

Thanks Cadd great post. 56 mo dumb here too...

.....I would like to suggest this to anyone taking this on.
The water pump drive sprocket on the shaft on the inside of the case is held onto the shaft by a very small snapring. The use of a slidehammer puller, or any other forces applied to the snap ring, might not be such a great idea cause it would not take a lot of force to have that snapring be jarred from its position. If the snapring becamed dislodged, the sprocket would come off the shaft and fall inside, completely ruining your day. I had a 1500 apart couple months ago and saw this setup and was quite surprised to see it!

Just a quick note Lomax, the slide hammer would be used on the outer race which is held in place by the engine case, not the shaft. All the force would be on the case, just as it would be if you split the engine and drove out the bearing from the inside......
