gas goes in gas comes out

Put fuel in my 07 Vulcan 1500 a couple weeks ago and it started leaking from around gas cap when I put it back on. Found this forum and the post about the o ring for the overflow tube. Looked at mine and sure enough half of it was missing. Bought a new o ring, put it in and it seemed to stop. Put fuel in bike yesterday and once again, fuel flowing from under the gas cap. I used compressed air, blew out the overflow tube, it was fine but noticed that the o ring did not look right, it sets sorta of crooked. I have no clue how to get the o ring to sit right, or if that even the problem. Looing for help..

OK, are you using a MaKawa O-Ring or one from the auto parts store? Ethanol in the gas will cause some types of them to swell and not sit down correctly, so you have to use the correct one. Is the seat area where the Oring sits dented/distorted in any way? Does the oring itself look distorted? Fatter than usual?
Have you checked the vent hose?
Might also need to look at the mating surfaces on both cap and tank, might be some rust or crap messing up the seal....possibly shoving it out of alignment..
This is a fairly easy fix, just gotta be a gas tank detective....

The new o ring came from the dealer, was not after market. I am going to take the cap off and try re-seating the o ring. Have also been told that float may be stuck and causing it to happen?? not sure how this works though.

You fill these bikes while on the side stand and then just to the bottom of the little sleeve thing in the tank opening.

After riding the bike and then parking it does the gas cap whistle when the tank is fairly full?
If not is it possible that it is not venting properly and that is causing it to leak?

Filled while on kickstand, did not fill past screen. It used to whistle a little tune all the time when it got hot, now it isn't. I know it will be something simple when I finally find it. just wish I would find it soon.

I would check both hoses that run down from the rear of the tank . They can easily be crimped .

Have checked hoses they seem fine, air goes through them. Took the cap apart and cleaned it out, was not sure exactly what I was looking for. While it was on the trailer on the trip home fuel kept running out from under the cap, was a hot day so the tank was getting direct sunlight.

Well, sounds to me like either your tank vent is closed/clogged/pinched off, gas expanding when hot....or your main seal on the cap is toast. The main tank vent is built into the cap, is a spring loaded valve....it'll whistle at you if too snug, if too loose, can allow gas to escape.
You have a overflow that only works when you fill it too much, then theres the vent, then theres your fuel return line, then theres your main fuel feed line.
I'd do a disassembly, replace the seals and clean everything or replace unit....

Oh, those floats.

Those are the ones that Gus, the Harley mechanic, keeps talking about changing to get 50% more hp on pump gas.

But that's only if you change the air in the tires from metric to SAE.
